Richard "Richie" Porte (born January 30, 1985 in Launceston ) is an Australian cyclist .

Career

Richie Porte drove for the Australian Continental Team Praties from 2008 to 2009 . At the Tour Down Under 2008 he started with the national team and finished ninth in the overall standings. Shortly afterwards he was successful on part of the Tour of Wellington . In 2009 he won a stage of the Giro Ciclistico d'Italia 2009, among other things .

He received his first contract with a ProTeam in 2010 with the Danish team Saxo Bank , for which he contested the Giro d'Italia 2010 and conquered the Maglia Rosa on the 11th stage and defended it for three days. He won the Maglia Bianca of the best young driver and came in seventh place overall.

After moving to Team Sky in 2012 he won the first time, the overall rating of ProTour - stage race he won in 2013 Paris-Nice and 2015 as well as in -Volta a Catalunya 2015. He was also one of the helpers of Chris Froome in the Tour de France wins 2013 and 2015 .

From the 2016 season Porte started for the BMC Racing Team and took part as captain of this team in the Tour de France 2016 , which he finished in fifth place overall.

On the 9th stage of the Tour de France 2017 , he crashed badly on the descent from Mont du Chat. When he was driving off the road in a group on the inside of a slight left turn, he lost control of his bike, fell, slid sideways across the road, cleared Daniel Martin and hit a rock face. He came to the hospital with a broken pelvis and collarbone. Porte also had to give up the Tour de France 2018 after a fall on the cobblestone stage 9 . The Belgian Jens Keukeleire , who also had to stop the race, was also involved in this fall .
