The 73rd Vuelta a España 2018 took place from August 25 to September 16, 2018. Leading to the Grand Tours belonging tour was part of the UCI World Tour 2018 .
Overall winner was Simon Yates ( Mitchelton-Scott ) with a conservative strategy. After taking the overall lead on the mountainous ninth stage, he handed it over to the runaway Jesús Herrada ( Cofidis, Solutions Crédits ) on the 12th stage, only to conquer it two days later with a victory on a mountain finish . He then spared himself for the last two mountain stages in Andorra , where he extended his lead. Yates also won the combined classification.
Second was Enric Mas ( Quick-Step Floors ), who also won the youth championship and a stage, 1:46 minutes behind Miguel Ángel López ( Astana Pro Team ), 2:04 minutes behind.
The points classification was won by Alejandro Valverde , who won a stage, was second in the overall standings for a long time and finally came in fifth overall. His Movistar team won the team championship .
Thomas De Gendt ( Lotto Soudal ) won the mountain classification through numerous participation in escape attempts .
Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors) won three stages in the sprint. Rohan Dennis ( BMC Racing Team ) won the two individual time trials before giving up the race.
Bauke Mollema ( Trek-Segafredo ) was named the most combative driver of the tour.
Participating teams and drivers
The 18 UCI WorldTeams were entitled and obliged to participate . In addition, the UCI Professional Continental Teams Burgos-BH , Caja Rural-Seguros RGA , Cofidis, Solutions Crédits and Euskadi Basque Country-Murias received wild cards . Last year's winner Chris Froome ( Team Sky ) was not at the start . Last year's runner-up Vincenzo Nibali stated after his fall at the Tour de France 2018 that he had no ambitions for the overall standings. Miguel Angel Lopez ( Team Astana ), Nairo Quintana ( Movistar Team ) and Rigoberto Urán ( EF Education First-Drapac ) were named as favorites .
route
The race started with an individual time trial over eight kilometers in Málaga . Another time trial took place on the 16th stage over 32.7 kilometers. The nine mountain arrivals , including the stage goals of the 19th and 20th stage in Andorra , are considered decisive . The tour ends in Madrid with a flat stage.

 - The leader in the points classification wore the green jersey . The points evaluation resulted from the addition of the points at the finish of each stage and the intermediate sprint, which was also carried out on each stage.
