Race course

At temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, five drivers took off with the starting shot: Pawel Kotschetkow (Russia / Katusha Alpecin), Robbert de Greef (Netherlands / Roompot), Lasse Norman Hansen (Denmark / Aqua Blue Sport ), Sam Welsford and Alexander Porter (both Australia / both national team). They could get out for a maximum of six minutes. On the third lap, Kotschetkow and Hansen were the last to leave the field. On the last lap, nine riders separated themselves on the climb: Peter Kennaugh (Great Britain), Daniel Oss (Italy), Jay McCarthy (Australia / all Bora), Simon Gerrans (Australia / BMC), Dries Devenyns (Belgium / Quick Step), Daryl Impey (South Africa), Esteban Chaves (Colombia / Mitchelton Scott), Pierre-Roger Latour (France / Ag2R) as well as Robert Gesink (Netherlands) and George Bennett (New Zealand / both LottoNL). A good kilometer before the finish line, another larger group managed to catch up with the outliers. In the end, McCarthy managed the group sprint ahead of Elia Viviani (Italy / Quick Step), who had the higher top speed but was poorly positioned.
