George Nelson Bennett (born April 7, 1990 in Nelson ) is a New Zealand cyclist .
Career
Bennett achieved a stage win in 2010 at the Tour of Vineyards , the Tour of Tasmania and the Bechmark Homes Tour . In addition, he was able to place in the top 10 in the overall standings of the Tour of Wellington and the Ronde de l'Isard .
For the 2011 season, Bennett received his first contract with an international cycling team , the US UCI Continental Team Trek Livestrong U23 , and at the end of the season rode as a stagiaire for the American UCI ProTeam Team RadioShack . In the same season he won the overall ranking of the Tour of Wellington and finished second in the final classification of the Ronde de l'Isard . In addition, he was third in the overall ranking of the UCI Oceania Tour .
In 2012 he received a regular contract with the successor team of the RadioShack RadioShack-Nissan team , for which the Giro d'Italia 2013 contested his first Grand Tour and finished in 122nd place. He also took second place in the New Zealand road championships.
In a health check carried out by the Union Cycliste Internationale before the 2015 Giro d'Italia, Bennett's results showed that the cortisone level was too low , which can be an indication of an illness, but also of the use of cortisone as a doping agent . Although this did not prevent a start according to the rules of the UCI, his Dutch team Lotto NL-Jumbo voluntarily withdrew him from the start according to the rules of the Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible .
In 2016, Bennett started in the road race at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but couldn't finish it. He finished tenth overall at the Vuelta a España 2016 , making him the first New Zealander to place in the top ten of a Grand Tour . The following year he won the Tour of California , again the first win for a New Zealander on a UCI World Tour . At the Tour de France 2019 he won the team time trial with his team Jumbo-Visma .
