The 25th New Zealand Cycle Classic (previous year Tour of Wellington ) took place from January 25th to 29th, 2012 in the Manawatu District , New Zealand . The bike race was held in five stages over a distance of 535.6 kilometers. It belonged to the UCI Oceania Tour 2012 and was classified there in category 2.2 . This made the New Zealand Cycle Classic the largest cycle race in New Zealand in 2012.

The overall winner and at the same time the winner of the U-23 classification of the largest New Zealand cycling race was the Australian Jay McCarthy from Team Jayco-AIS ahead of his compatriots Darren Lapthorne ( Drapac Cycling ) and Campbell Flakemore from Genesys Wealth Advisers , who had won the prologue time trial. McCarthy and Lapthorne had brought a successful escape attempt to the end on the second stage, McCarthy won the section, but Lapthorne secured the yellow jersey, which McCarthy was able to take from him as second on the penultimate stage thanks to the time credit and thus secured the tour victory. In the overall standings there was an Australian triple success, but the New Zealand hosts secured the mountain classification with Joseph Cooper and the sprint classification with Patrick Bevin . The team competition was won by McCarthy's team Jayco-AIS.
