Apiti is a small settlement in the Manawatu-Wanganui region on the North Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The place name means "gorge" in Māori - the local area is characterized by hills and cuts.
geography
The settlement is about 40 km north of Feilding at an altitude of 450 m above sea level. The Oroua River flows southwest of Apiti .
history
The Feilding Small Farm Association had been given 10,000 acres of bushland in the area for settlement, which it gave to its members. The land was divided into parcels and raffled along with the plots in the planned town. The first European settlers arrived at Apiti in July 1886 and cleared the bushland for farms in the following two decades. Some of the trees were used for logging, but a large part was burned down in order to obtain agricultural land as quickly as possible.
education
Apiti has a primary school with 26 students in 2013.
