Insterburg Castle

The castle Insterburg was a Teutonic castle of the Teutonic Order in the then East Prussian city Insterburg, today Tschernjachowsk . It served as a border castle against the hostile Lithuanians .

history

Insterburg was conquered by the Teutonic Order in 1256. In 1336 the castle was built on the steep bank of the Angerapp , not far from the confluence of Pissa and Inster . Another order castle, Burg Georgenburg, is in the immediate vicinity . The Georgenburg lies on the right bank of the Inster and the Insterburg on the left bank of the Angerapp. The castle was the seat of a commander . All eleven campaigns against the Lithuanians in the 14th century started from the Insterburg. In 1376 the castle was completely destroyed by this, but was soon rebuilt. In 1457 the castle was destroyed by the Poles in the Thirteen Years War. The settlement at the foot of the castle was first mentioned in 1466. In the Duchy of Prussia , the castle became the administrative seat of the town in 1525, which was granted town charter on October 10, 1583. On January 1, 1679 the castle fell into the hands of the Swedes. The Swedish Queen Maria Eleonore resided in the castle in 1642.

In the 18th and 19th centuries the castle was used as a court court and warehouse. The Napoleonic troops used the castle as a barracks and hospital . Therefore, the castle was repeatedly adapted and rebuilt to the different needs. After the First World War, a local history museum was set up and the outer bailey was used as a regional court. In 1945 the castle was partially burned down by the Soviet troops. In the rest of the buildings, a troop accommodation and then a building administration were set up. Only the southern farm building of the outer bailey with the defensive wall has been preserved from the original castle. The torment tower was also demolished. The remains are under monument protection .
