The Pissa ( Russian Писса ) is a river in the Russian Oblast Kaliningrad , a right tributary of the Angrapa ( Angerapp ).

It rises from the Wystiter See , flows south past Nesterow ( Stallupönen or Ebenrode ), takes on the Krasnaja ( Rominte ) in Gussew ( Gumbinnen ) before it flows into the Angrapa ( Angerapp ) shortly before Chernyachovsk ( Insterburg ) , which is a few kilometers continues to form the Pregel together with the Inster .

The name is derived from the Prussian pisa / pissa : " bottomless morass where only small birch and spruce trees grow", "quarry forest".

Remarkable

According to an anecdote, the inhabitants of Gumbinnen were uncomfortable with the name of their river, which is why they asked the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV to change their name. This ruled: Approved. Recommend Urinoco , alluding to the name of the South American Orinoco River, which Alexander von Humboldt traveled to .

Maps from the 1930s show the upper reaches east of Gumbinnen and the Angerapp as Roß-B. ( Roßbach (Pissa) ).
