The Lake Vištytis ( Russian Виштынецкое озеро / Wischtynezkoje Ozero , lithuanian Vištyčio Ežeras or simply Vištytis , German and Wyschtyter Lake ) on the border between Russia ( Kaliningrad ) and Lithuania ( district Marijampolė ) is located in a sparsely populated and wooded area, near the border triangle with Poland . Its area is about 17 km². Before the Second World War , the lake was on the border between Germany and Lithuania.

Most of the lake belongs to Russia. The hinterland on the west side is formed by the Rominter Heide . Lake Wystiter is under nature protection and is also known as the “European Lake Baikal ” in Russia because of its special flora and fauna .

The lake takes its name from the Lithuanian višta , the chicken. Vištytis, which is situated on the lake, is named after the lake.
