The 74th Vuelta a España 2019 took place from August 24th to September 15th, 2019.
Leading to the Grand Tours belonging cycling race was part of the UCI World Tour 2019 . It all started with a team time trial in Torrevieja . The tour ended with a mass start stage in Madrid .
The overall winner was Primož Roglič from Slovenia ( Team Jumbo-Visma ), who achieved his first overall victory in a major tour of the country. Alejandro Valverde ( Movistar Team ) finished second, 2:16 minutes behind, ahead of Tadej Pogačar ( UAE Team Emirates ), 2:38 minutes behind.
Roglič also won the points classification , Pogačar the junior classification. The French rider Geoffrey Bouchard ( Ag2r La Mondiale ) won the mountain classification . Miguel Ángel López ( Astana Pro Team ) was honored as the most combative driver of the tour . The team classification won the Movistar team.
Participating teams and drivers
The 18 UCI WorldTeams were entitled and obliged to participate . The UCI Professional Continental Teams Burgos-BH , Caja Rural-Seguros RGA , Cofidis, Solutions Crédits and Euskadi Basque Country-Murias also received a wildcard .
With Alejandro Valverde , Nairo Quintana (both Movistar Team ) and Fabio Aru ( UAE Team Emirates ) there were three former Vuelta winners in the field. In addition to them, the third of the Giro d'Italia 2019 , Primož Roglič , and the third of the Tour de France 2019 , Steven Kruijswijk (both Team Jumbo-Visma ), the third of the Vuelta last year , Miguel Ángel López ( Astana Pro Team ), and Rigoberto Urán ( EF Education First ) was one of the favorites for the overall win. Last year's winner Simon Yates and runner-up Enric Mas did not start.

With a total of eight mountain arrivals, the course favored the mountain specialists. On six stages, the sprinters had a chance of a mass finish, even if these sections also regularly contained climbs. There were also two time trials , the team time trial at the beginning and a 36-kilometer individual time trial on stage 10 in Pau .

- The leader of the overall standings wore the red jersey . As always in stage races, the overall ranking was the result of adding up the times driven. In addition, there were 10, 6 and 4 time bonuses for the first stages - except for the time trial stages - as well as 3, 2 and 1 second time bonuses for the intermediate sprints.
- The leader in the points classification wore the green jersey . The points evaluation resulted from the addition of the points of each stage and the intermediate sprints.
- The leader in the mountain classification wore the blue-dotted jersey . This evaluation resulted from the points awarded to the drivers who were the first to cross a classified climb.
- The leader in the junior ranking, which was reserved for drivers born after January 1, 1994 and which followed the rules of the overall ranking, wore the white jersey.
- The team ranking resulted from the addition of the times of the three best drivers of a team on each stage. The drivers of the leading team wore a red number on their backs.
- On the first 20 stages, the most combative driver was awarded a yellow number by a jury. This jury also chose the most combative driver of the tour.
