Cullera is a city in the eastern part of Spain in the Valencian Community and the Comarca Ribera Baixa with 22,145 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).

location

It is located 38 kilometers south of the city of Valencia on the Mediterranean Sea.

Cullera almost entirely covers an extensive plain, the most important point of which is the mountain of Cullera with a height of 225 meters. Cullera is irrigated by the lower reaches of the Júcar River, from which an extensive network of irrigation channels emanates, thanks to which the entire municipality is characterized by a dense garden landscape. The rather dry Mediterranean climate leads to an average annual temperature of over 17 ° C.

history

The mountain of Cullera has been populated since ancient times. Its origins can be traced back to the Paleolithic , which is proven above all by the various archaeological finds that can be visited in the local prehistoric and archaeological museum La Cueva del Volcán del Faro . The interesting buildings scattered over the entire municipality of Cullera represent eloquent testimony to the rich past of the place as early as prehistoric times and which experienced a heyday especially during the Moors .

  • The castle of Cullera: The castle of Cullera, located halfway up the mountainside near the village, dominates both the old part and the modern part of Cullera. Its origins date before the 10th century and on the ruins of the first Moorish castle, King Jaime I had the current castle built in the 12th century, which was later restored by Pedro IV “the ceremonial”. The castle was fought over during the War of Independence .
  • Church Santuario de la Virgen del Castillo : This patronage church, built between 1891 and 1897, was built in the neo-Romanesque style. A sturdy bell tower with a dome, which is covered with copper-colored glazed roof tiles, rises above its main facade.
  • Tower of the Moorish Queen ( Torre de la Reina Mora ): In the Barrio del Pozo district , on the way to the Calvary, the Tower of the Moorish Queen is a fortified gate of the Castle of Cullera. This tower was built in the 13th century and was an important part of the fortifications of the castle, in which the so-called Albacar was a free space surrounded by walls and towers.   • Town hall: The Ca la Vila dates from 1781 and is located on the Spanish square in the middle of the historic center and was built by Charles III. built.
  • House of Teaching ( Casa de la Enseñanza ): Former educational center built in 1793 by Charles IV and one of the first public schools in Spain.

The airport of Valencia (Manises) is 40 km away from Cullera. The airport of Alicante (El Altet) is 150 km away.
