Enguera ( Valencian : Énguera) is a Spanish municipality with 4752 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the Comarca Canal de Navarrés in the southwest of the province of Valencia .

geography

The place is located on the southern edge of the Cuevas de la Araña, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Site - cave paintings, a good ten kilometers west of the route of the Borgia cities Canals and Xàtiva , separated from them only by the A-35 autovía. It is located about twenty kilometers south of the Tous Dam and a good 60 kilometers south of the provincial capital Valencia in the middle of the Sierra de Enguera, which is named after it .

history

Archaeological finds of atypical flint stones in the Llano de Jesús indicate settlement as early as the Mesolithic (8000-5000 BC). Finds of human remains in the Carrasquilla Cave and other places go back to the beginning of the Bronze Age (1600 BC). Remains of Roman villas exist in Faracuat and Alto de Vistabella from the time of the Roman emperor Augustus . In the 12th century, the city in the Moorish Taifa kingdom of the Amirids occupied a key strategic and military position in the region, which lasted until the Treaty of Almizra (March 26, 1244). Then the city in the Kingdom of Valencia went to the Crown of Aragon . The Muslim castle was destroyed in 1365. At the end of the 18th century, the local textile industry flourished.

Economy and culture

Today's economy is characterized by olive growing and the resulting oil production. In addition, rural tourism has established itself. The place is now home to a significant number of Bulgarians who have their community center in the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel . Several museums reflect the diversity of the city's history.

Twin cities

Enguera has parish partnerships with Melesse in France and, since 2008, with Haskovo in Bulgaria . Blason ville for Melesse (Ille-et-Vilaine) .svg Haskovo-coat-of-arms.svg
