Piles is a municipality in the Valencian Community , Spain . It is located in the Comarca Safor in the province of Valencia .

geography

Piles and the surrounding area lie on almost flat ground and border the Mediterranean with a beach of around 1.5 km. There are no bumps and only small streams. Piles borders Miramar to the north, Palmera and Alquería de la Condesa to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the east and Oliva to the south .

Residents

In 1572 there were 53 houses in Piles with 239 inhabitants, in 1713 there were 60 with 270 inhabitants. Only in the 18th century did the population increase to around 900 (1787). In the following century the population increased to 1,925 due to the proximity to Oliva , and increased further due to tourism and local businesses.

Attractions

Tower of the Piles
  • Torre vigía de Piles : The watchtower was built near the coast in 1577 to repel attacks by the Saracens . It has a height of 13 m and a diameter of 10 m and stands a bit away from the beach. It was restored in 1986 and is now surrounded by a park.
  • Platja : Piles is part of the Plan de Playas Accesibles initiative for barrier-free beach access in the Valencian Community.
