Bellreguard ( Castilian Bellreguart ) is a municipality in the Valencian Community , in the Comarca La Safor on the Costa del Azahar ( Mediterranean coast ).

Community structure

Like many larger towns in the La Safor comarca near the coast, Bellreguard also has a beach settlement right by the sea. This lies between Playa de Guardamar de la Safor in the north and Platja de Miramar in the south. The old town, simply called “pueblo” by the locals, is about 3.3 kilometers further inland. Mainly to the sea there are mainly multi-storey houses, but there are also a few smaller holiday homes, only separated from the beach and sea by a promenade . At the Plaça de la Marina there is a children's playground and a tourist information office.

history

Determining the origin is difficult. On the one hand, the archive was destroyed by fire; on the other hand, there are hardly any archaeological remains. However, a Moorish necropolis discovered in 1984 indicates an Islamic origin. In 1486 the place was acquired by the Duke of Gandia . In a script from this time, the old Arabic name Sotaia was replaced by the current one for the first time . After the expulsion of the Moors in 1609 the place was a ghost town . This is not surprising when you consider that out of 165 families only four had Christian roots. Since then, the population has been growing steadily.
