Villamarchante ( Valencian Vilamarxant ) is a municipality in the Valencian Community (Communidad de Valencia) in Spain . At the same time it belongs to the province of Valencia and the provincial district of Campo de Turia. The regional and provincial capital, Valencia, is 24 km away. The name Villamarchante is made up of two words: the word "villa" = villa and "marchante" = dealer / customer.

Villamarchante is located on the right bank of the Turia River ( Río Turia ), which once flowed through the city of Valencia and is now diverted around the city and flows into the Gulf of Valencia on the Costa del Azahar . The municipality of Villamarchante extends over an area of ​​approx. 71.1 km² and has 9717 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). Approx. 25% of the area is covered by forests. Villamarchante forms the geographical border between the Valencian plains bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountain range. In the middle of the mountain range, approx. 35 km from Villamarchante, is the reservoir Embalse de Loriguilla (German: Reservoir Loriguilla). This is 3.64 km² and has a capacity of 71 million cubic meters of water and ensures the sustainable irrigation of the fields in and around Villamarchante.

The highest point of Villamarchantes is the Monte Horquera mountain , which is part of a nature reserve. The city of Valencia and the Mediterranean coast can be seen from its top . At the foot of the mountain are the two settlements belonging to Villamarchante, "Urbanisación Monte Horquera" and the "Urbanisación La Llomayna".

Villamarchante can be reached via the CV-35 Ademuz / Valencia motorway , Liria exit , via the subsequent CV-50 “Variant de Benaguasil” slip road, or via the A-3 “Autovía del Este” Madrid / Valencia motorway, Cheste exit.

The “Villa Marxant Bus” runs from the town hall square “La Báscula” via Burjassot to the center of Valencia. In addition, line 158 goes directly to Valencia in around 30 minutes to “Gran vía Ramón y Cajal”, where there is a connection to the train ( Renfe ) and the metro .

The metro network of the Valencia metro has been continuously expanded in recent years, so that Villamarchante will be accessible via the red line 3 from the end of 2011.

The neighboring village of Cheste, 7 km away, is connected to the national RENFE rail network.

history

Even if there is evidence of remains from the Bronze Age , the first known data about Villamarchante come from the time of the Christian reconquest . In the year 1238 the area including settlements was founded by King James I conquered. Villamarchante was given as a fief to Pedro Cornel and then to Ximén Pérez de Arenoso. The history of Villamarchantes is closely linked to the history of the neighboring municipality of Liria , one of the most important cities in the Iberian era .
