Ontinyent ( Valencian and official; Castilian : Onteniente ) is a Spanish municipality in the autonomous region of Valencia with 35,347 inhabitants ( INE ; as of January 1, 2019). It is the capital of the Comarca Vall d'Albaida in the southwest of the province of Valencia .

Ontinyent is located on the Rio Clariano in the Serra Grossa mountain range at an altitude of 382 meters.

In the north are the places Moixent , Vallada and Aielo de Malferit , in the east Agullent and Albaida , in the south Bocairent , Banyeres de Mariola , Alcoi , Muro de Alcoi , in the west Fontanars dels Alfornis , Font de la Figuera and Villena .

history

During a storm in September 2019 , almost 300 liters of rain per square meter fell in one night. The Clariano overflowed its banks, flooding the Canterería district and taking cars with it.

One of the biggest festivals is Moros i Cristians , which takes place at the end of August and commemorates the Reconquista , the battles between Moorish and Christian troops, as well as the support of the coastal towns in the fight against the Saracen pirates between the 8th and 15th centuries. The celebration begins on the Thursday before the fourth Sunday in August and ends the following Monday. During the celebration, the Moorish and Christian pages are divided into twelve comparsas , each of which is costumed the same and very elaborately. Every year, a Comparsa symbolically leads the train. Organizationally, the festival is actually organized by the Sociedad de Festeros del Santísimo Crito de la Agonía .

The Ontinyent CF football club, founded in 1947, had its most successful period in the 1960s and early 1970s. For a total of five seasons, the Valencians were represented in the Segunda División , the second highest Spanish league.

economy

The Pulga company started developing automobiles in 1952. The designers were Juan Labrés and Vicente Mas. Production started in 1955 and ended in 1957 after around 60 copies were made.

The Gasoducte Península-Illes Balears natural gas pipeline begins in Ontinyent and leads from here to the Balearic Islands .
