Gasoducte Península-Illes Balears

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gasoducte Peninsula-Illes Balears is a gas - pipeline that from the Spanish mainland to the Balearic Islands leads.

description

The total length is around 319 kilometers. The maximum depth of the underwater section is more than 1,000 meters below sea level. The dimensions of the pipeline were designed based on a forecast of gas demand up to 2025. In view of these design data and the technical requirements for pressure, an internal pipe diameter of 16 cm was chosen. The wall thickness of the steel pipeline is 15.9 mm and is designed for a maximum operating pressure of 220 bar. Construction began at the end of 2008. The first section to Ibiza went into operation in 2009 with a pressure of 80 bar and in 2010 the entire Gasoducte Península-Illes Balears project was completed. The outdated coal-fired power station Central Térmica de Sant Joan de Déu in Palma was shut down when it went into operation .

Routing

The pipeline begins in Ontinyent in the autonomous region of Valencia with a compressor station and initially runs 46 kilometers on the mainland to the Mediterranean coast in Oliva . From there as an underwater pipeline 123 kilometers to the island of Ibiza and from there 150 kilometers to Palma . In Mallorca, the natural gas pipeline continues to the Central Térmica de Cas Tresorer and Central Térmica de Son Reus power plants in Palma, and a main pipeline goes across the island via Inca to the Central Térmica de Es Murterar power plant in Alcúdia . The operator of the gas pipeline is the Spanish company Enagás .

Extension of the route in Mallorca

As of August 2014, 350,000 households were connected to the natural gas network, mainly in the catchment area of Palma de Mallorca.

A 42 km long gas pipeline from the compressor station in Palma to the area of Calvia and Andratx is under construction as of August 2014; it should cost 20 million euros. Another line to Manacor and Felanitx is being planned. The total volume of investments for the gas pipelines on the island amounts to around 70 million euros.

The smaller towns and end customers will then be supplied with natural gas from the main points. As of August 2014, however, the main customers are the three power plants on Mallorca and the Central Térmica de Ibiza power plant in Ibiza Town .
