history
Settlement in Felanitx goes back to the Bronze Age, when the first people settled in caves at the Puig de Castell de Santueri. The Roman name fenalicius is derived from the Latin fenum (hay), which indicates the agricultural importance of the region. The place Felanitx was founded by the Moors in the 11th century. The numerous windmills (no longer functional), which were built on a rocky ridge above the town and used to be used for flour production, can be seen from afar. Majorcan capers, apricots and almonds are important agricultural products today.
Felanitx was the first wine-growing area on Mallorca. At the end of the 18th century, different grape varieties were planted on an area of around 2,200 hectares in the municipality. At the end of the 19th century, phylloxera destroyed a large part of the vines. Today about 75% of the Mallorcan white wine comes from the area around Felanitx.
On Palm Sunday, March 31, 1844, 440 people died in Felanitx when a side wall of the church collapsed at the Way of the Cross. Another 200 people were injured at the time.
Today, Felanitx is best known for white wine, capers, almonds and ceramic handicrafts.
