Miquel Barceló , fully Miquel Barceló Artigues , (born January 8, 1957 in Felanitx , Mallorca ) is a Spanish painter and sculptor .

Life

Miquel Barceló studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Palma de Mallorca and at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona . In 1976 he joined the Mallorcan group for conceptual art Whimsy Workshop (Taller Llunàtic). Barceló was committed to ecological issues and belonged to an environmental group on Mallorca. From the very beginning, his work has reflected an interest in motifs from nature, which had a great influence on his younger contemporaries.

In 1981 Barcélo took part in the São Paulo Biennale and in 1982 in the Documenta in Kassel . His travels and stays in Europe (he has a studio in Paris), the United States and West Africa ( Mali ), where he has another residence, have marked his artistic career over the past few years.

In his extensive work, Barceló takes up questions of religion, anthropomorphism and the environment. This leads to an “expanded concept of art”, which is expressed in the choice of materials (often organic) and in the working method (action painting).

In 2003 a book illustration by Dante's Divina commedia was published.

In 2006 Miquel Barcélo took part in the Festival d'Avignon with Josef Nadj with the performance Paso Doble .

Since March 2007, the cathedral houses La Seu of Palma an oversized ceramic work by the artist that gave rise to fierce polemics occasion. The contemporary art in a 700 year old cathedral, which depicts the biblical story of the miraculous multiplication of bread and fish, is fantastic in its representational quality and sparked a dispute in the Spanish press about what art is allowed to do. Barceló did not take part in the dedication mass and described himself as an agnostic , which led to further controversy. The ceramic is almost 300 square meters and covers an entire chapel, the five glass windows of which were also designed by the artist.

At the beginning of 2007, Miquel Barceló began work on the ceiling design of Hall XX in the Palais des Nations in Geneva . The new meeting room of the UN Human Rights Council , spanned by the 1500 square meter ceiling painting, was inaugurated on November 18, 2008.

One of his works is the design of the dome of the Mercat de les Flors theater in Barcelona. Miquel Barceló's works are represented by the Tobias Mueller Modern Art Gallery in Zurich , the Bruno Bischofberger Gallery in Zurich, Acquavella Galleries in New York and the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Salzburg. A documentation center is located in the Na Batlessa cultural center in Artà on Mallorca.
