geography

location

The municipality is located on the main road MA-13, from Inca towards Alcúdia . Campanet covers an area of 34.62 km² and borders the municipalities of Pollença , sa Pobla , Búger , Selva and Escorca . The north of the area is mountainous, with a hilly landscape in the center, which was formed from the alluvial valleys of the Torrents Comafrea and Caselles - which after their union form the Torent Sant Miquel. An alluvial plain extends in the south of the municipality. The mountains in the northern part do not reach a particularly noticeable height, but there are many wells (fountains) here, which is perhaps the most characteristic of the municipality. Filtration in the rainy season creates remarkable springs in the mountains, such as the "fonts Ufanes de Gabellí".

history

The assumption that the place name has its origin in "campana" or "campaneta" (bell, little bell) is obvious, but is wrong. Rather, Campanet is a combination of the late Latin capanna with the Arabic plural kapanät, which means grouping of shepherds' huts and indicates that this area has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times.

At the time of the Moors , this settlement, together with the settlement of Ullaró, belonged to the Inca district and formed the core around which the place grew in the Middle Ages. As can be seen in the book on the division of territory by Jaume I, Campanet had an area of 18 Juchart or 288 Quarterades (one Quarterada - 71.03 acres) after the Catalan conquest and, together with Búger, formed the present-day estate of Ullaró and Sa Pobla was a single community that was assigned as a royal share to the nobles from Barcelona. The original church near the caves was built on the summit of the Tel, probably over an even older building. The current chapel of Sant Miquel has been a parish church since 1248, according to a note by Pope Innocent IV . In 1315 the ecclesiastical sponsorship was transferred to Sa Pobla, from 1368 to 1425 again to Sant Miquel, when this was transferred to a new church built in the center of the village. These ecclesiastical inconsistencies went hand in hand with political ones. As a result of King Jaume II's zealous city planning policy , Campanet was attached to Sa Pobla in 1300. After several disputes and requests from the aldermen of Campanet, Campanet became independent as a parish and parish in 1368 with the permission of Pere the Ceremonial together with the districts of Búger and Ullaró. The last change happened in 1823, when Búger also became an independent municipality. The current parish church was built in worship of the Immaculate Conception over an even older one. Construction began in 1717, at the time of the parish priest Miquel Martí Tamorer (his crypt is in the center of the church, under the presbytery); In 1774, after a few interruptions, the church was completed.

Economy and tourism

Until the 1940s, the local economy was limited solely to the agricultural sector. In 1945 the footwear industry experienced spectacular growth: in that year it produced 422,000 pairs of shoes, which were sold in Mallorca, Cuba and the army. At the present time, the construction sector and the service companies for tourism in Alcúdia play the main role. The inhabitants lead a very active social life, which takes place in the summer months on the village square, where there is a lively hustle and bustle and there is a lively conversation.
