Location of the municipality of Deià

Deià is a small town with administrative headquarters near the northwest coast of the Balearic -Insel Mallorca , on a hill at the edge of the Tramuntana mountain range located.

Landscape and history

Deià

This mountainous landscape with the Puig des Teix, 1,064 meters high, is surrounded by holm oaks at 400 meters above sea level, is criss-crossed by torrents and has a five-kilometer-long, inaccessible coastline. The city has three zones: the upper ( es Puig , crowned by the church and the cemetery), the middle (parallel to the Valldemossa – Sóller road) and the lower ( es Clot , core of the original village). The municipality has an area of 15.12 km², it borders on the municipalities of Sóller , Bunyola , Valldemossa and the sea. 617 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) live in the municipality of Deià. In 2006 the proportion of foreigners was 36.7% (260) and the proportion of German residents was 9.3% (66). The small town of Llucalcari with the chapel De la Mare de Déu is also part of Deià . The place name Deià is first mentioned in the Chronicle of Valldemossa in 1583. The name is said to come from the Arabic daia or daya ("field" or "village"). Deià built a network of watchtowers between the 16th and 17th centuries to defend itself against pirate attacks. At the end of the 18th century there was a decline in population due to the strong emigration to France as a result of the agricultural crisis, and many returned at the beginning of the 20th century. Between those first years around 1900 and the 1960s, people also made a living from smuggling. After that, luxury tourism became the main economic factor, which also gave the gastronomy and construction industries significant impetus.

Since the beginning of the last century, numerous artists (painters, writers, musicians and film actors) such as Peter Ustinov , Ava Gardner , Pablo Picasso , Robert von Ranke-Graves , Santiago Rusiñol , Daevid Allen , Andrew Lloyd Webber , Mati Klarwein , Kevin have settled in Deià Ayers , Pierce Brosnan and Anaïs Nin and gave the place the nickname “Mallorca's artist village”. Personalities such as Ramon Llull and the Austrian Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Habsburg-Lothringen also lived here. With the acquisition of the Finca S'Estaca near the Son Marroig estate near Deià by the American film actor Michael Douglas , the place also became a popular tourist destination. Deià has been the setting for the ZDF series Hotel Paradies since the late 1980s .

On July 20, 2006, a Robert Graves Museum was opened. In the Finca Ca n'Alluny , built by Robert von Ranke-Graves in 1932 and completely restored when it opened , original manuscripts and personal belongings give an insight into the life and work of the British writer.

Deià has a total of two beaches. Three kilometers below the village is the small pebble bay of Cala Deià with natural stone caves converted into boat garages. Cala Deià is located between Punta de Son Beltran and Sa Pedrissa , where a defense tower was built against pirate attacks. This bay, surrounded by medium-high rock walls, is overgrown with garigue and Aleppo pines and ends in a semicircular beach, into which a torrent flows and where terraces rise. Coarse sand and gravel form the steeply sloping beach. On the sides there is a small landing stage, escars and a few restaurants.

The long-distance hiking trail GR 221 leads through Deià , Refugi de Can Boi serves as hiking accommodation in the village.

Es Canyeret is also known as Platja de Llucalcari . The name of this spot is of Latin and Arabic origin and can be translated as "village by the forest". Boulders, pebbles and gravel form the beach of this small bay, which is well suited for swimming, but not for anchoring, as it is open to the north winds and interspersed with overwater rocks. In the immediate vicinity there is a fig tree and a freshwater spring, which some visitors also use for a mud bath. There is also near the coast to the northeast, only visible from the sea, sa Cova Fosca , a grotto open to the sea in the steep rock walls. 3.2 nautical miles away is Port de Sóller .
