geography

location

On the main road MA-11 from Palma in the direction of Sóller at kilometer 14 on the right is the extensive municipality of Bunyola, which has a large amount of natural and cultural assets. The district can be divided into two very different sectors: the northern mountainous part and the southern part, which extends to the flatlands of Palma with its numerous olive groves. The northern part includes part of the Serra de Tramuntana , a barrier 1000 meters high, which is only interrupted by the Coll de Sóller at 496 meters. The mountain peaks of this mountain range have no vegetation, while the slopes have a high population of holm oaks , which in some places mixes with pines.

The place can be easily reached for day trips by train from Palma.

history

The origin of the name Bunyola is not clear. Some researchers believe that the name comes from the Latin uineola , which means small winery, and that the Arabs later changed the name to buniola . Another theory is that the name comes directly from the Arabic bunyân .

The cultural and historical property is considerable in this municipality. At the foot of the mountain range there are a large number of well-known mansions, such as S'Alqueria , Biniforani , Sa Font Seca etc. and of course the two most famous buildings with gardens: Alfàbia and Raixa .

In Na Franquesa and Al Teix, buildings that are of lower cultural value, but still very interesting , can be seen: structures that can be used to catch snow. In the Puig des Teix there is also the former manor house Caça del Rei Sanç , which popular poetry ascribes to King Jaume I.

Culture and sights

Jardins d'Alfàbia : On the right-hand side of the main road to Sóller, around 3.5 kilometers north of Bunyola and just before the entrance to the tunnel, perhaps the most beautiful gardens in Mallorca await a visit. They belong to the former estate of an obviously instinctive Moor: called Ben Abet , the foresighted vizier had supported the Christian King Jaume I in the reconquest of Mallorca from his fellow believers and was rewarded with the generous property. Moorish horticulture transformed the water-rich area into a real jungle of all kinds of trees, exotic plants and flowering shrubs with cleverly laid out canals. In the associated manor house, which mostly dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, antiques and antique furniture can be seen. The ceiling in the gateway, made in the Moorish-Christian Mudejar style , bears an inscription that praises Allah. At the entrance to the village, coming from the road from Sóller, there is the small train station, from which a trip to Sóller or Port de Sóller through the mountains is recommended.
