City of Alaró

The small town of Alaró, the administrative center of the municipality, is located northeast of Palma at the landside foot of the Serra de Tramuntana . Eight mountain peaks belong to this municipality, the Puig de Sa Font Fresca in the Serra de Tramuntana being the highest at 836 m, and the Puig Ventós at 274 m the lowest.

history

Alaró was first mentioned in a document in 1241 with the name Oloron. But the origin of the name is still in the dark. Two theories are put forward.

The first goes back to the name Ilurone, probably of Iberian origin, which was often used as a city name in historical Spain.

The second theory suggests that the word was derived from the Arabic expression hisn al-rum , ( حصن الروم ) "Roman fortress", where hisn ( حصن ) means "castle" or "fortress" and al-rum , ( الروم ) , "Romans" or " Byzantines " with the article "al" in front of it. Rum would have run out of steam. The term hisn al-arun can be found in a text by Al-Zuhri, in which the conquest of the island in 903 by Islam is described. Al-Zuhri mentions a fortress built in a high and lonely place, a hisn al-arun ( حصن الارون ), which actually means “Aron's fortress”.

Alaró

The defense of the Castell d'Alaró is inextricably linked to the tragic history of the Kingdom of Mallorca . How far the history of the fortress goes back high up on the 825 meter high Puig d'Alaró is in the dark. The Arabs called it the Christian Castle. It is said to have withstood the attacks of the Moors for eight years when they conquered Mallorca at the beginning of the 10th century. What is certain is that the Arabs recognized the extremely favorable position of the mountain peak and expanded the castle.

Why the Arab governor Benahabat handed over the castle shortly after the Christian reconquest in 1231 without a fight is uncertain. Again the fortress was expanded and modernized. From now on it was considered impregnable. In 1285 the Castell d'Alaró was attacked again, this time by the Aragonese King Alfonso II. His uncle Jaume II , as King of Mallorca, was a vassal of the Crown of Aragón , but was considered unreliable and had secretly allied himself with France was to capture Aragón. Alfonso II led a punitive expedition to Mallorca and was able to conquer Palma in a few days, but not the Castell d'Alaró.

This took a few years. When he finally made it, so the legend goes, King Alfons had the two leaders of the resistance, Guillem Cabrit (billy goat) and Guillem Bassa (Brasa charcoal), roasted alive on two spits, alluding to their names.

This act was the reason for the excommunication of Alfons by the Pope. Jaume got his kingdom of Mallorca back after swearing allegiance to Aragón. When Pere IV of Aragón finally smashed the Kingdom of Mallorca in 1349, the Castell d'Alaró also fell and has remained in ruins to this day.

Others

Alaró is a city without large hotel complexes. Due to the Castell d'Alaró and the hiking opportunities, it is very busy in the high season.

Industry

For over 100 years, miners unearthed the mineral coal in Alaró. In the process, this now-forgotten branch of industry achieved a modest tradition. During the coal boom years, which coincided with the Cuban War (1898) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), there were several hundred miners on the island. In Alaró, Lloseta and Selva they worked up to 200 meters underground, in Biniamar and Sineu in open-cast mines. In 1987 the colliery in Alaró was closed.

Personalities

The Finnish secret service agent and author Otto Kumenius (1912–1996) lived and died in Alaró . The Spanish sculptor Llorenç Rosselló (1867–1901) also lived in the village.
