history
The origin of the small country town goes back to the Moors . But even before the Arab rule in Roman times, this was the route from Palma to old Pollentia, today's Alcúdia .
Santa Maria was the first rest stop on the way north from Palma. The strategic location of this place could have given the city its name. Santa Maria del Camí that literally translates as “Saint Mary of the Way”. In truth, the place is named after the chapel of the same name in La Garriga in Catalonia , which was under the patronage of the Santaeugenia family. Bernat de Santaeugenia, an important member of this family, was the first ruler of the area after the Catalan conquest of Mallorca and gave its name to the settlement founded there.
Economy and Infrastructure
Today the economy of Santa Maria del Camí is based, among other things, on the retail trade and the manufacture of concrete products for the construction industry. The Santamariers (that's what the locals call themselves) made a name for themselves in the past, especially in the textile industry. A merited craftsman has successfully made the old tradition of the Mallorcan weavers come alive again. Today this workshop is one of the few that still produces the typical Teixit de llengües or de Llengos . Llengua or Llengo means tongue in Catalan, and the Teixit de llengos is a cloth that represents a kind of tongues of flame on a white background, originally usually in the traditional color blue. It has since been changed and is available in very different color combinations.
Culture and sights
The place is characterized by the countless colorful signs that advertise the purchase of leather products and refer to free samples in the bodegas.
- The parish church of Santa Maria, built around 1216, is a massive church surrounded by a rock garden with the image of Mary on the high altar and furnishings by Francisco Herrera.
- The Convento de Minimos is located directly on the main road and is now the Monumento Historico Artistico Provincial. The Way of the Cross is one of the most impressive in Mallorca due to its beauty. The Museo Balear is now housed in the rooms of the monastery founded in the 18th century. It houses finds from the prehistory and early history of the island and items from Mallorcan customs and costumes from the 18th and 19th centuries.
traffic
