geography
Geographical location
The municipality of Santa Margalida is around 45 kilometers from the island's capital, Palma . It is part of the region ( comarca ) Plà de Mallorca or Es Plà, the great plain in the center of the island.
The municipality is one of the flattest on the island with hardly any heights over 100 meters above sea level ( msnm ). Some torrents (torrents) drain the municipal area in a northeastern direction to the sea. In the northwest, Santa Margalida borders on the freshwater swamp area of S'Albufera , a nature reserve. Obelisks are set up at regular intervals of 1,250 meters along the northeast coastline . With their twin towers set up 200 meters inland, they were orientation towers for seafaring in the past century.
Neighboring communities
To the northwest and west, the municipalities of Muro and Llubí border the municipality of Santa Margalida. Both belong to Es Plà , as do the neighboring communities Maria de la Salut , Ariany and Petra to the south . To the east, the Torrent de na Borges forms the border with the municipality of Artà in the Llevant region .
Community structure
The following places belong to the municipality of Santa Margalida:
- Can Picafort (6757/6853 inhabitants)
- Santa Margalida (3375/3628 inhabitants)
- Son Serra de Marina (694/726 inhabitants)
The population figures in brackets are from January 1, 2008. The first number indicates the residents of the built-up areas, the second number the residents of the towns, including the “scattered” population outside the actual settlements. (Source: INE )
Santa Margalida
The place has a long tradition in agriculture and handicrafts.
The historically documented foundation of a community took place in the first years after the Reconquista . However, the old inscriptions and tombstones indicate that the place was already inhabited in Roman times, under the name Hero . Later under the Arabs, the large Abenmaaxbar estate was located here . There are many legends and myths about the place itself and the image of St. Margarita, which ultimately led to the name of the community.
The large parish church of Santa Margalida is a testament to its prosperity. It was built in 1232 and in the 17th and 18th centuries. Rebuilt in the 19th century. The church offers a wide view over the country. Inside, the church boasts rich furnishings in the side chapels.
Can Picafort
Can Picafort (idiomatically correct spelling: Ca'n Picafort) is a tourist town on the Bay of Alcúdia . Between Port d'Alcudia in the north of the bay and Can Picafort, roughly in the middle, there is a five-kilometer-long sandy beach with hotel after hotel. Only the S'Albufera nature reserve, which borders the bay for about two kilometers, prevents the two tourist locations from growing together. The 800 hectare nature reserve is a pleasant alternative to the neighboring tourist centers and is best explored with a rental bike.
The place Can Picafort is completely designed for tourism . There are many bars and restaurants on the beach promenade, there is a shopping street for the day and a pedestrian zone for the evening.
Can Picafort is a place that is not only lively in the tourist months. In the off-season, however, things are much quieter and many shops are closed. The population has already exceeded that of the main town Santa Margalida in the mid-1990s and Can Picafort has become a place of residence. The most important infrastructure facilities are now also available here.
Son Bauló
From the district of Son Bauló you can reach the necropolis of Son Real and s'Illot des Porros , the latter located on an offshore island, to the southeast along the coast . Both are legacies of the so-called Talayot culture from Mallorca's early history. The coastal path continues from there to Son Serra de Marina.
Motorsport
Can Picafort is home to one of the largest kart racing tracks on Mallorca. After the renovation in 2004, the go- kart track has a total length of 1325 m. It divides into two lanes. There are available for the approved professional race track (725 m) and for the rental kart track (825 m). In addition to national races, an international 24-hour race takes place there every year.
Son Serra de Marina
The holiday resort, which was laid out in a chessboard-like manner in the 1960s on part of the area of the former Son Serra estate , six kilometers southeast of Can Picafort, stretches around 1400 meters along the Bay of Alcúdia. It consists exclusively of one to two-story houses, most of which were built as second homes by locals. It is accordingly quiet on the streets. During the holiday season, the owners of the houses come and liven up the place alongside the tourists. In contrast to Can Picafort, mass tourism has not yet found its way here. At the beginning of the road leading to the coast to Son Serra de Marina there is a prehistoric building, the Talaiot de sa Cova de sa Nineta . The street is named after him, is called Avinguda del Talaiot de sa Nineta and ends at the port of Son Serra de Marina.
Son Serra de Marina has a small marina on the western edge of the settlement, next to which surfing is popular in the northwest . The town is bordered to the east by the Torrent de na Borges . The beach there is the spot for windsurfers and kite surfers . Next to the beach to the east there are two restaurants and a free car park. A curiosity from the time of the development of the settlement is the express stipulation in the purchase contracts of the time that women and men were never allowed to bathe together.
The place has three moderately frequented beaches. Within the settlement, southeast of the port, is the 210 meter long and 50 meter wide Platja de s'Home Mort . In the east, the approximately 350 meters long and up to 65 meters wide Platja de Son Serra de Marina merges into the almost 1700 meter long beach of Sa Canova , which already belongs to the municipality of Artà and almost to the district of S'Estanyol von Colonia de Sant Pere is enough. Both sections of the beach are separated by the Torrent de na Borges , which only flows into the sea after a lot of rainfall and otherwise forms a brackish water pond , the Estany des Bisbe , at the rear of the beach . To the west, a little away from the settlement, is the Platja de Son Real , whose southeast side, the area of Son Serra, is also called Platja des Dolç . From there, a coastal footpath leads northwest to Can Picafort.
