Beaches and bays in Mallorca

S'Arenal de Sa Canova is a long sandy beach in the northeast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located on the southeastern edge of the Badia d'Alcúdia ("Bay of Alcúdia "), the largest sea inlet on the north coast of the island.

Location and description

Located in the north-western part of the municipality of Artà , S'Arenal de Sa Canova can be reached from the east via Colònia de Sant Pere from the district of S'Estanyol on a coastal footpath. The beginning of the beach is s'Entrada ("the entrance") at Cape Punta de sa Barraca . The western edge of the beach is at the mouth of the torrent Torrent de na Borges , which expands to the S'Estany des Bisbe ('Bishop's Pond ') in front of the Son Serra de Marina settlement , which is already part of the municipality of Santa Margalida . When it rains heavily, the water that has previously accumulated in the pond breaks through the sand barrier and pours into the sea.

S'Arenal de Sa Canova is almost 1700 meters long and an average of 30 meters wide. At the mouth of the Torrent de na Borges, the sand surface extends up to 100 meters into the interior of the island. Sometimes the beach northwest of the Torrent, in the municipality of Santa Margalida, is added to S'Arenal de Sa Canova , which results in a total length of about 2000 meters. The name Platja de Son Serra de Marina is used for this area . However, there is another beach within the settlement 600 meters to the northwest, the Platja de s'Home Mort east of the harbor, which is sometimes also called Platja de Son Serra de Marina ("Beach of Son Serra de Marina").

Is named S'Arenal de Sa Canova after the countryside Sa Canova d'Arta , by the Badia d'Alcudia south to the main road MA-12 from Can Picafort enough to Arta. Since the area of the beach is not cleared out, it can, especially in the eastern part at s'Entrada to seaweed deposits come. In the middle, the beach is divided by the flat rock formation (ses Roquetes) from sa Regata des Llop . The western section at Son Serra de Marina is often visited by surfers (including windsurfers and kite surfers ), as you can park there without any problems next to the beach. With the exception of the western area, most of the beach is naked .

Behind the beach are the nature reserves Area natural Sa Canova and Na Borges of the type ANEI ("Àrea natural d'especial interès"), nature areas of particular value. They consisted of shrubs such as the western strawberry tree ( Arbutus unedo ), dwarf palm ( Chamaerops humilis ), stone linden ( Phillyrea spp. ), Wild olive tree ( Olea europaea var. Sylvestris ), Phoenician juniper (also called Phoenician cedar) and Aleppo pine . The extensive dune zone, the Marina de Sa Canova, stretches a few kilometers inland. Near the beach growing beach lily , beach thistle , beach bulrush , beach grass , make-up Wurz and sea breezes. Here the only buildings in the area protrude from the dunes, the old bearing towers ( Torres d'Enfilació ). They were used in military maneuvers with boats and submarines from 1941 to 1970 . With their rectangular floor plan and pyramid-shaped bodies, their construction is reminiscent of obelisks .

The pond S'Estany des Bisbe at the mouth of the Torrent de na Borges near Son Serra de Marina is a wetland with reeds ( Phragmites australis ssp. Australis ), beach rush ( Juncus maritimus ), sedge trees , tamarinds and tamarisks . The small brackish water lake , where samphire grows in some places , is home to various species of birds such as kingfisher , gray heron ( Ardea cinerea ) and purple heron ( Ardea purpurea ), common pond ( Gallinula chloropus ), mallard ( Anas platyrhynchos ) and coot ( Fulica atra ). The water level of the pond fluctuates according to the amount of rain at different times of the year. In heavy rain, its water flows into the sea.

Away from the beach, about two kilometers inland and about 150 meters from the road between Artà and Colònia de Sant Pere, are the remains of the Talaiotic settlement of Sa Canova , the foundations of two prehistoric towers of a settlement of the Talaiot culture . They are on the Sa Canova de Morell estate , part of the Sa Canova d'Artà area .

In October 2012, the municipality of Artà announced that Belgian investors were planning to build a new holiday complex with 200 luxury bungalows behind the beach area. Since the Tourism Act came into force on Mallorca in the summer of 2012, urbanization of the zone appeared possible again. The investment of 70 million euros is intended to create around 120 to 150 new jobs. The mayor of Artà, Jaume Alzamora, spoke out against the project in the protected landscape area.
