The stone linden ( Phillyrea ) are a genus of two types of evergreen shrubs in the olive family (Oleaceae). Their distribution area extends over southern Europe and Asia Minor.

description

The stone linden are evergreen shrubs. The opposite arranged leaves are leathery, undivided, with short stalked entire margins or toothed.

The flowers are dioeciously divided sexually ( diocesan ), d. That is, male and female flowers are found on different shrubs. They are arranged in compressed, axillary bunches on previous year's branches. The individual flowers are whitish, small and fragrant. The chalice and crown are in four parts. Two styles are formed that are shorter than the stamens . The ovaries are superordinate and two-sided.

The fruits are spherical or oblong-egg-shaped, dark purple to blue-black drupes with a diameter of about 6 millimeters. The stone core is thin-walled and heavily lignified.

One finds representatives of the genus in southern Europe and Asia Minor.

Systematics

The genus Phillyrea is counted in the olive family of the tribe Oleeae.

In the World Checklist of Selected Plant Families of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew following types are recognized:

  • Narrow-leaved stone linden ( Phillyrea angustifolia L. ): leaves with entire margins with a few pairs of lateral veins
  • Broad-leaved stone linden ( Phillyrea latifolia L. ): leaves with serrated leaf margin and five to 12 pairs of lateral nerves
