Branches
Branches with fruits

The narrow-leaved stone linden is an evergreen shrub up to 3 meters high with bare shoots. The leaves are opposite. The leaf blade is 3 to 8 centimeters long and a maximum of 1.5 centimeters wide, oblong to linear-lanceolate, pointed with a wedge-shaped base, with entire margins or rarely with teeth and leathery. The upper side of the leaf is olive green, the underside glabrous and yellowish green. Four to six indistinct nerve pairs at a narrow angle to the midrib are formed per leaf. The fragrant flowers are arranged in small, axillary racemes. The calyx is thick, brownish, has four rounded tips and is cut to about a quarter of the length. The sulfur yellow crown is about 2 millimeters long and four-lobed. The fruits are spherical, 6 to 8 millimeters large, when ripe blue-black drupes with persistent stylus . The species blooms from March to May, the fruits ripen from September to October.

The natural range of the narrow-leaved stone linden is in North Africa in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia and in Europe in Italy, France, Portugal and Spain. The species is naturalized in the Crimea. It is a character species of the maquis and also grows in light forests on moderately dry to fresh, slightly acidic to alkaline, loamy or sandy-loamy, often calcareous, nutrient-rich soils in light to partially shaded locations. The species loves warmth and is only moderately frost hardy.
