Colonia de Sant Pere ( Castilian Colonia de San Pedro ) is a place on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the west of the municipality of Artà in the region ( comarca ) Llevant .

Location and description

Colonia de Sant Pere was created as a settlement on the east side of the Badia d'Alcúdia (Bay of Alcúdia ), the largest sea inlet on the northeast coast of Mallorca. The town, founded in 1880, has 543 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2014). In addition to Colònia de Sant Pere, on the east coast of the Bay of Alcúdia there are still some remote settlements, called "urbanizations", which emerged in the 1960s such as the Urbanització Betlem , the Urbanització Montferrutx and the Urbanització s'Estanyol .

Location of Colonia de Sant Pere on the Badia d'Alcúdia

The small port of Colonia de Sant Pere houses some fishing boats, but is mostly called by yachts . The town's buildings are one to two storeys high, and there are no high-rise buildings like those in other tourist centers. Tourism has already found its way here, but is not designed for high visitor numbers. The promenade and beaches are accordingly quiet.

A few bars and restaurants have settled on the bank promenade north of the harbor, which is furnished with benches under tamarisks . Below the promenade is the local beach protected from the north by a breakwater. It is about 80 meters long and 20 meters wide. The beach is equipped with showers and is well attended in summer.

Surroundings

Other beaches can be found mainly southwest of Colonia de Sant Pere. Passing the small beach in the S'Estanyol district, the 1,800-meter-long beach of s'Arenal de Sa Canova is worth a trip. Behind the beach is the sa Canova d'Artà forest area , where the Talaiotic settlement of Sa Canova , remains of the Talaiot culture , a prehistoric megalithic culture , is located.

On the coastal path towards Urbanització Betlem are the remains of the dolmen of S'Aigua Dolça , a large stone grave from the period 1750 to 1650 BC. To find.

Excursion destinations for hikers are in the adjacent mountains. Via the Ermita de Betlem there are hiking trails to the defense towers Talaia Freda and Talaia Moreia as well as to the Puig de sa Tudossa above the Cap de Ferrutx .
