The Talaia Moreia , also known as Torre de Moreia or Torre de Foc , is a listed watchtower on the coast of the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca .

location

It is located in the municipality of Artà at Cape Ferrutx at an altitude of 443  msnm above the Mediterranean Sea.

Architecture and history

The tower was built in 1604 and repaired in 1629, as attacks by pirates were frequent at that time . The height of the tower is ten meters, the entrance is at a height of five meters and could be reached via a rope ladder or a wooden ladder or rope, which was pulled in in case of danger. In addition, a window with a machicolation was placed above the door for defense . The tower has only one chamber, above which the roof terrace is located.

The equipment of the very remote and tall tower was extremely complex. The tower was manned by two only lightly armed guards and served as a watch and signal tower. It was part of a system established in the 16th century to warn of pirate attacks. The towers of the system were each manned by a tower guard. A beacon was lit when enemy ships were approaching; Fresh wood during the day to give a smoke signal, dry wood at night to generate clearly visible flames. The neighboring towers, each within sight, and the hinterland were alerted. In the hinterland, bells called men together for defense. The rest of the population sought protection in additional defensive structures. Its epithet Torre de Foc means fire tower .

The tower is registered in the local monument register under the number RI-51-0008346.
