Rope ladders with throwing hooks (fol.28r in Konrad Kyeser's Bellifortis manuscript (1459))

The rope ladder is a ladder whose mostly wooden or metal rungs are held by two parallel side ropes . Rope ladders of a very lightweight design can also be found in which the rungs are also made from ropes. The advantage of the rope ladder is that it can also be used to reach curved elevations and store it to save space.

Since a normal rope ladder cannot simply be leaned against like an ordinary ladder, it can only be lowered from anywhere without outside help. Without an assistant to lower the rope ladder from above, it can only be used for descending. To ascend, the higher point must first be reached in another way (e.g. throwing line with throwing anchor or grappling device) so that the ladder can be attached and lowered.

Areas of application

  • Firefighting : Rope ladders are used at emergency locations below the stand level.
  • Military : rope ladders were used to conquer castle or city walls.
  • Seafaring : In the field of shipping, rope ladders can be used in a variety of ways.
  • Mountaineering : In the early years of alpinism , rope ladders played an important role.
  • Caving : Even for cavers are rope ladders important in some cases.
  • Air rescue : rope ladders are of paramount importance for air rescue .
  • Break-ins and outbreaks : Rope ladders are still sometimes used for break-ins and outbreaks.

Examples

  • With the plug-in rope ladder ( the product name Stabru is often used as a generic name ), the individual rungs are put together to form a longer pole. At the top of the ladder there is a hook or loop that can be attached to the pole at a higher point. After hanging, the rungs can be pulled apart again from below with a slight pull and the ladder climbed.
  • The Jacob's ladder is a rope ladder used on board. It is lighter in construction than a pilot ladder and is mainly used for outboard work on ships.
  • Fireproof metal rope ladders (also called rescue ladders or emergency ladders ) are used for escape routes from homes and offices. They are packaged to save space and can be thrown from the balcony or the window if necessary. They enable rescue from heights when other escape routes are blocked. Rescue ladders are also available in a version with spacers in the form of metal sheets (which are attached to the steps), which is advantageous for smooth facades and an upper fixation without a protrusion, as the rungs can only be climbed safely with difficulty if they are directly attached to them the facade. No spacers are required when hooking onto a ledge (e.g. a protruding balcony).
  • In caves ( caves ), particularly light rope ladders made of thin steel cables and narrow aluminum rungs are used. These are very similar to the fireproof rope ladders.

node

The wooden rungs are connected to the rope with the rope ladder knot , or drilled through and the rope pushed through and fixed with an overhand knot or a double overhand knot . On old sailing vessels the shoots were also between the strands stuck to the ropes and gekleedet or the ropes were coated with a top and bottom Takling provided.

Others

Model based on the patent specification by Julius Griese in Kolberg from 1879

In a German patent from 1879 for a muscle-powered helicopter , a rope ladder was supposed to serve as an endless drive belt for the rotors. The driving person should set the rope ladder in motion by continuing to climb up.
