Catalina Thomás
Catalina Thomás ( Catalan Caterina Tomàs i Gallard ; also Katharina Thomás or Katharina von Palma ; born May 1, 1531 in Valldemossa , † April 5, 1574 in Palma ) is a saint of the Catholic Church . The feast day of the saints who were born in Mallorca and who worked there is April 5th.
The house where Saint Catalina was born is located on Carrer de la Rectoria in Valldemossa . As a young girl, Catalina devoted a large part of her free time to prayer at a self-made altar in a field, where all kinds of temptations, miracles and visions are said to have set in. Catalina's particular piety was noticed by a nobleman. At the age of 20, thanks to his patronage, Catalina was accepted into the novitiate of the Augustinian women choirs of Palma , although, as she came from a poor background, she had no dowry. She died on April 5th, 1574 in the monastery of St. Mary Magdalene, partly admired for her patient manner, despite many inner temptations, and her penchant for mysticism , partly viewed with suspicion by her fellow sisters .
Adoration
After a beatification process that lasted more than 200 years , Catherine of Palma was on August 3, 1792 by Pope Pius VI. beatified. Pope Pius XI canonized them on June 22, 1930. Catherine of Palma is the only saint in Mallorca, which is why she is particularly venerated there. In Valldemossa in particular, there are naively painted tile pictures on almost all houses with scenes from her life and an inscription in which the saint is called for her intercession .
The relics of the saints rest in a glass shrine in the Santa Maria Magdalena church in Palma on Plaça Santa Magdalena.
Katharina von Plama is also known as "La Beateta" (the blessed). On July 28th a big festival will be celebrated in her honor in Valldemossa. The Festes de la Beata take place on the first Sunday in September in Santa Margalida with a procession and scenic representations that are performed by children to the various traditions surrounding Catalina.
