The necropolis of Son Real ( Mallorcan Necròpolis de Son Real , also Necròpoli de la punta Fenicis ) is a prehistoric , largely above- ground burial ground on the north coast of the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . Little is known about the culture of the builders due to the lack of written records. It is the largest " city of the dead " found and uncovered on the Balearic Islands.

location

The necropolis of Son Real is located in the Mallorcan municipality of Santa Margalida on the small headland Punta des Fenicis , the "tip of the Phoenicians ", directly on the Badia d'Alcúdia ("Bay of Alcúdia"). The coastal area of Son Real in the north of the island, where the tombs are located, is named after a 395 hectare estate, the main building of which is on the road (MA-12) from Alcúdia to Artà . Apart from the buildings of the estate, this coastal strip between the towns of Can Picafort in the west and the eastern Son Serra de Marina is undeveloped. A large part of the area of Son Real consists of pine forest , which excludes the often rocky flat coast, so that the historical graves located there are not covered by tree growth.

description

Notice board in front of the necropolis

The 800 square meter necropolis dates from the 7th to 4th centuries BC. BC , but was also used later as a burial place. Archaeological excavations on the site began after the discovery in 1957, commissioned and funded by the William L. Bryant Foundation, and were completed by 1970. The megalithic construction of the 109 preserved tombs partly resembles ship-shaped or horseshoe-shaped naviformes , while others resemble the round and square towers of the late Talaiot culture of that time (Talaiot III and IV). The round grave structures are from the end of the 7th century BC. BC, the horseshoe-shaped buildings from the 5th and the rectangular buildings from the 4th century BC. Assigned. Part of the necropolis was probably destroyed by sea erosion.

Weapons, jewelry and everyday objects were added to the more than 300 found dead. Animal bones and shells were also found in the graves. The buildings, which are mostly oriented to the southeast, often have two niches each, in which the corpses were placed in fetal position . From the 4th century BC Cremation was also practiced. Near the necropolis there are other grave sites on the small island of s'Illot des Porros off the coast . The origin of those buried in the necropolis is unclear, as no associated settlement has been found to date. A previously assumed Phoenician burial is now ruled out. Finds from the tombs of the necropolis can be viewed in the "Monographic Museum of Poŀlèntia " (Museu monogràfic de Poŀlèntia) in Alcúdia.
