The Talaiot de sa Cova de sa Nineta (also just Talaiot de sa Nineta ) is a prehistoric tower on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the municipality of Santa Margalida in the region ( comarca ) Pla de Mallorca , near the bay of Alcúdia on the north coast of the island. The talaiot (from the Catalan word talaia for "observation and watchtower"), built on a square plan , has been preserved in the lower part. The building is built using the Cyclops technique and is attributed to the Bronze Age Talaiot culture (also Talayot culture), which Mallorca lived from 1300 to 123  BC. BC coined.

location

The Talaiot de sa Cova de sa Nineta is located in the Son Serra area within the municipality of Santa Margalida. Son Serra is the name of a former country estate that stretched on the coast between the mouths of the Torrent de Son Real and the Torrent de na Borges , two torrents that drain the water of heavy rains north into the Mediterranean from the interior of the island . The estate is now parceled out and is crossed from northwest to southeast by the MA-12 road, which connects Alcúdia to Artà via Can Picafort . The Talaiot stands directly on this country road, a few meters northwest of the confluence of the only road leading to the sea in this area, the connection between the village of Son Serra de Marina and the Bay of Alcúdia. The road to the coast bears the name Avinguda del Talaiot de sa Nineta after the prehistoric building and ends at the port of Son Serra de Marina.

description

Western corner of the talaiot

Among the towers of the Talaiotic culture, a distinction is made between square and round structures (Catalan talaiot square and talaiot circular ). The Talaiot de sa Cova de sa Nineta is a square tower with a side length at the base of approximately 11.5 × 11.5 meters. The five remaining rows of worked limestone blocks, placed one on top of the other, taper towards the top.

The construction of the talaiot is dry masonry , which means that the large stone blocks were stacked on top of one another without the use of connecting material. The stone blocks are not of the same size and the horizontal rows are set irregularly. During a restoration in the late 1960s, newer stones were added to ensure the stability of the structure. A cult site previously located next to the Talaiot was destroyed during construction work on the highway.

Nothing is known about the former height of the Talaiot, this cannot be deduced from the remains. A sixth row and a stone in a seventh row to the top have been preserved on the northeast side. The interior is filled up to the height of the surrounding fifth row of stones with large stone blocks that are streaked with vegetation and that could have come from the former upper part of the talaiot. On the southeast side, the tower has an opening about one meter wide to the interior, which is covered by a stone block of the fifth row. The purpose of the opening is unknown; it is generally assumed that the interior of the talaiot is accessed. On the north-east side, remnants of the wall of additions can be seen, made more irregular and made using smaller stones.

The Talaiot de sa Cova de sa Nineta has been registered as an archaeological monument (Monument arqueològic) since 1966 under the number RI-51-0002747 . On October 9, 2011, the municipality of Santa Margalida carried out a volunteer clean-up of the archaeological site, during which the talaiot and the surrounding area were cleared of the overgrown vegetation. Other prehistoric soil structures were found during the work.
