Porreres ( Spanish : Porreras ) is a municipality on the Balearic island of Mallorca with 5502 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). In 2008 there were 4699 inhabitants in the town of the same name. In 2006 the proportion of foreigners in the municipality was 17.1% (831), the proportion of German residents was 2.7% (129). Porreres is in the interior of the island and is about the same distance from Llucmajor , Campos and Felanitx . The main economic factor is wine and apricot cultivation.
Porreres borders the municipalities of Llucmajor , Montuïri , Sant Joan , Vilafranca , Felanitx and Campos .
Surname
The name Porreres is derived from the surname of the crusader Guillem de Porrera from the comarca Priorat . This is said to have been involved in the expulsion of the Moors from Mallorca.
history
The area around Porreres has been populated since the Bronze Age.
The city archives were also attacked during the revolution of 1868 ; important documents that recorded about 600 years of the history of Porreres were burned.
During the Spanish Civil War , mainly in Manacor , Palma and Porreres, supporters of the republic were executed in Mallorca , including the last republican mayor of Porreres, Climent Garau. In 2016, a mass grave with the remains of 71 people who were shot nearby was found in the cemetery. 14 of them could be identified. There is a memorial at the site of the executions.
economy
Porrere's economic focus is on agriculture. It is an important apricot growing center in Mallorca. The fruits are cut in half and dried.
