The 1348 founded Sanctuary of Monti-sion (also dt. Sanctuary Montesion, span. Santuario de Monte-Sión ) is approximately 248 meters on the hill Monti-sion ( Puig de Monti-sion ) in the southeast of the Mediterranean island Mallorca in the Near the town of Porreres (Spanish: Porreras).

History of the Santuari de Monti-Sión

The origins of the Santuari de Monti-Sión with an attached boys' school can be traced back to the year 1348 and go back to an oratory with an attached hermitage . The oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary was replaced in 1498 by a church that was completely renovated or rebuilt in 1711. In 1551 a school was founded here by Jesuits , which also served to prepare students for theological studies . The expulsion of the Jesuits in the 17th century led to the Santuari de Monti-Sión being taken over by the Franciscans . For reasons of space, some of the students did not live in the school on the mountain, but in the surrounding towns.

In 1835 the school was abandoned (dismortment). At the end of the 19th century, the Santuari de Monti-Sión was restored and is now used for various events, such as concerts and theater performances. The presbytery was restored in 1890 on the initiative of the later Bishop of Mallorca, Pedro Juan Campins Barcelo .

location

The rounded hill Monti-Sión (248 msnm) is located about 3 km outside Porreres in the southeast and can be easily reached by vehicles on the road built in 1954. The hill lies almost exactly between the two monastery mountains Randa and Santuari de Sant Salvador and is an extension of the Randa massif. There is a good view of the area around Mallorca and the wide Es Plá plain .

architecture

The complex of the Santuari de Monti-Sión shows a harmonious architecture with a pentagonal cloister, unique for Mallorca, and a cistern in the courtyard . In addition, to the left of the entrance there is another, architecturally well-fitted draw well .

Way of the Cross and Gothic Columns

A way of the cross is installed on the way to the top of the hill . The stations of the cross are on both sides of the street. This way of the cross exists partly since 1497. There are also Gothic columns along the way with reliefs of the deadly sins . Only a few of the columns have survived.

Boys school

In 1694 a grammar hall was built. Above the entrance is the coat of arms of Porreres and two student symbols (inscription: Dilicit Dñs portas Sion dil. Dñs portas studiosorum ).

There used to be twelve bedrooms, each accommodating up to eight students. A total of 20 rooms were available. Accommodation is now available in the former dormitories of the students.

church

The Gothic church is dedicated to the Holy Mother of Mount Zion and has a flat, pointed bell tower . The bell dates from 1686. The 14th station of the cross is located above the entrance to the church . The single-nave interior has two sections and a chancel and two side chapels . Various tools, statues, votive tablets, etc. are kept in the sacristy on the left .

The image of the Madonna at the altar comes from the parish church and was made from marble by Gabriel Móger in the 15th century .

Altars

The current altarpiece was installed around 1890 on the initiative of the later Bishop of Mallorca, Pedro Juan Campins Barcelo. The former main altar in the Santuari de Monti-Sión church is now the main altar in the Gothic church of Santa Maria dels Àngelsin Pollença and was erected in around 1800 as a replacement for an older altar in Santa Maria dels Àngels.

The side altars are dedicated to Saint Francis , Saint Barbara , the Visitation of the Virgin and Saint Thomas Aquinas .

Firmly

Every year on the Sunday after Easter there is a procession to the Santuari di Monti-Sion, where local customs, chants and dances are cultivated.
