Place Sencelles

Sencelles, the administrative center of the municipality, is the place of the hundred names, the place name that has given rise to most speculation about its origin. So some take the view that Sencelles means cent selles (one hundred jugs), others think it means cent celles (one hundred parcels), still others derive the name from centelles (sparkle, glitter) and there are many more hypotheses that most, however, are based on imagination and an eagerness to unravel the mystery that certain words hold within them.

Sencelles is a village of villages . In addition to Biniali, the community also includes the villages of Ruberts, Jornets, Judi, Cascanar and Laia. These represent - although they are tiny and almost uninhabited - one of the main attractions of Sencelles. Today they are the last sites of the rural and traditional architecture of Mallorca. In earlier times, however, they were prosperous, primarily from viticulture, the main agricultural activity of the parish and its surroundings.

Other products of dry field cultivation such as figs, almonds and grain, together with cattle breeding, were the main industries in this region almost to this day. Fig production is still of paramount importance today.

The human and religious facet of the place is illustrated by the figure of the sister Francinaina Cirer (1781–1855), the daughter of the place popularly known as 'di sa Tia Xiroia'. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 1989 and is venerated not only in Sencelles, but throughout Mallorca for the numerous healings attributed to her.

The sound of the shawms in Sencelles is particularly festive and cheerful, because it calls on people to abandon the fieldwork and enjoy the traditional songs that their ancestors have played and heard as long as memories go back. The island's most famous shawm players and builders have always come from Sencelles. A great mastery in this field has been achieved here and it seems like the future of this beautiful tradition is.

history

The grave cave Cova des Camp des Bisbe on the northeastern edge of the village dates from the pre-Talaiotic period . The Talaiotic era left numerous traces in Sencelles, the most important of which is the Talaiot de Son Fred . At the time of the Arab rule, Sencelles belonged to the district of Canarossa alongside Binissalem, Alaró , Santa Maria, Santa Eugenia, Costitx and Lloseta. With the conquest of Mallorca by Jaume l . these extensive lands become the property of Vescomt de Bearn. At that time Costitx was the parish of the district of Canarossa until 1238 Sencelles took over this function. Later Sencelles is part of the Jaume II . In 1309, the reorganization of the villages was completed, including the farms of Biniali, Costitx and Cascanar.

By the end of the 16th century, the Biniali farm had already turned into a small settlement. At the end of the 19th century, the entire viticulture around Sencelles was destroyed by a phylloxera epidemic and the small villages that had emerged with the upswing slowly depopulated and lost their importance.

The human and religious facet of the place is illustrated by the figure of the sister Francinaina Cirer (1781–1855), the daughter of the place popularly known as di sa Tia Xiroia . She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 1989 and is venerated not only in Sencelles, but throughout Mallorca for the numerous healings attributed to her.

Costitx broke away from Sencelles in 1855 after long years of rivalry and confrontation between the two towns.

The localities that belong to Sencelles are currently gaining life from the fact that numerous second homes have been established here.
