The Talaiot de Binifat is a prehistoric tower on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It stands on an agricultural plot of land in the municipality of Sencelles in the region ( comarca ) Pla de Mallorca . The talaiot (from the Catalan word talaia for "observation and watchtower"), built on a circular plan , has been preserved in the lower part. The building is attributed to the Iron Age Talaiot culture (also Talayot culture), which Mallorca from 9th to 6th century BC. BC coined.
location
The Talaiot de Binifat stands about 100 meters above sea level on the private property of Finca Binifat , about 20 meters in front of an elongated building used for agricultural purposes. The distance to the center of Sencelles in the north-west is 3.5 kilometers, and that to the center of the neighboring town of Costitx in the north-east is 2.2 kilometers. The Talaiot can be reached on paved roads, from Sencelles on the Camí dels Horts , from Costitx on the Camí de Binifat . The preserved remains of the tower are 40 meters southeast of the Camí dels Horts behind a metal gate that blocks the way to the Talaiot.
description
Among the towers of the Talaiotic culture, a distinction is made between square and round structures (Catalan talaiot square and talaiot circular ). The structure of the Talaiot de Binifat is a round tower. It is characterized by the missing central column in the interior, which is often found in similar Talaiot buildings and served as a support for a roof made of stone or perishable material. It is believed that the talaiot originally had a central column, but this was later removed for another use.
The Talaiot de Binifat has an outside diameter of about 15 meters. Its remaining height is about 4 meters. The passage to the interior of the talaiot is in the west. It leads straight into the interior and is framed with large stones. As with other talaiots, the space between the external and internal walls, constructed as dry stone , is filled with rubble and earth. Scientists believe that the Talaiot de Binifat was likely part of a settlement. Possible remains of the settlement have not yet been uncovered. A former ceremonial center is known from close by, which consists of two barely visible talaiots, one round and one square.
