The Talaiot de Son Fred is a prehistoric tower on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It stands in a field in the municipality of Sencelles in the region ( comarca ) Pla de Mallorca . The talaiot (from the Catalan word talaia for "observation and watchtower"), built on a circular plan , has been preserved in the lower part. The building is attributed to the Iron Age Talaiot culture (also Talayot culture), which Mallorca from 9th to 6th century BC. BC coined.

location

The Talaiot de Son Fred is located at about 103 meters above sea level in the parceled area of Son Fred . The land on which it stands was acquired by the Fundació Juan March in the second half of the 20th century and donated to the municipality of Sencelles, which opened it to the public. The distance to the center of the town of Sencelles in the southwest is 1.7 kilometers. The Talaiot can be reached on paved roads such as the Camí de Son Canyís , which leave the MA-3120 road, the road from Sencelles to Inca .

description

Sign in front of the talaiot

Among the towers of the Talaiotic culture, a distinction is made between square and round structures (Catalan talaiot square and talaiot circular ). The Talaiot de Son Fred is from the plant, a round, upward tapering tower. It was examined in two excavation campaigns in 2005 and 2006 under the direction of Javier Aramburu-Zabala and Damià Ramis.

Northwest side of the talaiot

The Talaiot de Son Fred is about 13.6 meters in diameter at the base and 12.2 to 12.4 meters in the upper area. The remaining external height is 5 meters on the northwest side. The inner chamber of the talaiot is 3.7 meters high and 5.1 to 5.5 meters in diameter. The space between the outer and inner masonry made of dry, stacked stone blocks is filled with earth and rubble. In the center of the inner chamber is a column made of four stone blocks with a total height of 3.7 meters. The height of the individual blocks varies from 0.54 meters (lower block) to 1.18 meters (upper block).

The passage to the interior of the talaiot is in the southeast. It is 50 centimeters above the ground on the outside and is 1.61 meters high and 0.96 meters wide. The lintel is formed by an upwardly curved stone block, 1.80 meters wide, 0.50 meters high and 1.40 meters deep. In contrast to many other talaiots on Mallorca, but no exception, the passage does not lead directly into the interior. It describes an angle to the right and then to the left into the interior. The access to the interior is higher than the outer entrance.

About 75 meters southeast of the Talaiot de Son Fred are the remains of a second Talaiot on the Son Salí property . Pottery was found on the area between the two. The excavation leaders assume that the Talaiot de Son Fred was probably part of a settlement. The possible remains of the settlement have not yet been uncovered.
