In architecture, tapering refers to the gradual thinning of a column shaft or a pillar in the direction from bottom to top and, in perspective, the gradual apparent shrinking of distant objects as they move away from the eye. This subjective appearance must also be expressed in the perspective drawing. For carpenters, taper is the bevel of a piece of wood.
