history

Poblat Talaiotic de S'Illot

The municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar was already inhabited by humans in prehistoric times. Excavations show a settlement beginning around 2000  BC. Chr. Of the more than 70 cataloged localities are following here the vortalaiotischen culture and the culture Talaiot called lying on the municipal area of Sant Llorenc: Calicant, Can Roig i Torre Nova, Can Tafal, Ca s'Hereu, De l'Època talaiòtica, Els talaiots de Calicant, Infern Vell, Les coves de Ca n'Amer, Na Pol (Sa Coma) , Poblat Talaiòtic de S'Illot , Pou Colomer Vell, Sa Blanquera, Sa Coma , Sa Real, Sa Talaia, Sa Vaca i Ses Voltes, Ses Planes, Ses Talaies, Ses Toltes, Son Barbot, Son Negre, Son Puça .

Only from the late Roman period are some records that provide information about the sonorous name of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar , which was also retained in the Moorish period. However, the place was only given the nickname of Cardassar after the Reconquista . When Jaume I occupied the island with his army, a Madonna figure was revealed in a field near Sant Llorenç , which had been hiding in the thistle undergrowth during the rule of the pagans . The miraculous discovery of the Mare de Deú dels Cards (Spanish: Nuestra Señora de los Cardos ), the “Mother of God with the thistles, Thistle Madonna ”, gave the place the sonorous nickname of its prickly addition of the Cardassar (Spanish: de los Cardos, Ger .: "Near the thistles").

In the early 13th century, the Church of Santa Maria del Bellver was also built in honor of the Madonna, where Sant Llorenç was worshiped. The parish of the same name was mentioned in a bull by Pope Innocent IV . The place was then also called Santa Maria del Bellver or just Bellver , although Sant Llorenç de Bellver (1349) and Sant Llorenç des Cardessar (1519) are also documented. The parish church of Sant Lorenç is mentioned for the first time in the chronicle in 1236; the current building dates from 1654. The left side chapel of the Rosary Madonna with the statue of the “Mare de Deu Trobada” is noteworthy.

Son Carrió

The place Son Carrió was only created in the second half of the 19th century by parceling out near the old chapel of Son Torell . At Son Torell as well as Sa Gruta , Es Rafal de sa Riba , Son Berga , Es Molinet and Es Boscarró , several manors were built between 1885 and 1893. Son Carrió was still called Sant Miquel in 1879 . The local parish church, designed by the architect Antoni Maria Alcover, was completed in 1907.

Until 1892 the municipality of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar belonged to Manacor . At the time of independence, agriculture, a small carpentry industry and the craft of embroidery were the main branches of the economy in the now independent community. In 1948 the parcelling of Ca n'Amer de S'Illot was approved , which from 1959 assumed a town-like character. The onset of tourism completely redesigned both the economic structure and the landscape, especially on the coast. After Son Moro , the southern part of Cala Millor , was parceled out in 1965 , the Punta de n'Amer peninsula is now the municipality's only undeveloped coastal strip.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture in the fields, which were mainly tilled as drywall, was the most important source of income for the residents. The Arab rule brought advances in irrigation, so irrigated agriculture also prevailed.

Crafts such as millers, weavers, blacksmiths and carpenters also settled here, but agriculture dominated until the 19th century . In the 20th century only small businesses such as art embroidery came along. In 1930 and 1950 a power station was built in Son Carrió, and in 1921 the Manacor - Artà line brought the railway to Sant Llorenç and Son Carrió. The line was operated until 1977 .

Punta de n'Amer

In the 1960s, the service sector increasingly pushed agriculture back. The fields and fields were given up, instead one of the most important centers of tourism in Mallorca was established in Cala Millor. In the 1980s, Sa Coma developed into a major European travel destination. The Punta de n'Amer peninsula between the two places remained undeveloped and was declared a nature reserve of special value.

Today, services, especially in the tourism sector , and construction are the municipality's most important industries.

Sheep and goat breeding

It is no surprise that the Madonna of all people chose the thistle bush . Because on the edge of the Llevant with its foothills of the Serres de Llevant (mountain range), almonds , wheat, chickpeas and beans have always been grown in the fields . In the areas at the foot of the Serra de Llevant, farmers and landowners have been raising sheep and Mallorcan goats ( cabra mallorqui ) since the 14th century .

These races are extremely effective landscape conservationists, as long as they graze where they do not eat away the harvest from humans, but rather frugally keep the thistles, which are spurned by the other four-legged friends, within limits. Up until the 19th century it was normal to keep herds of up to 600 sheep. You can still find the stone huts built without mortar in the arid area with immediately adjacent basins made of soft Marès stone or, according to the situation, natural stone troughs, the so-called cocós . The wool and meat were sold in the numerous markets across the island.

The Mallorcan goats ( cabra mallorqui ), whose urge to discover no herbs has grown, keep the thistles short and are usually free in the mountains. In the evening they are then collected again by the shepherds. Goat cheese is a standard product of the cuisine in Mallorca.

Storm 2018

October 10, 2018

In the afternoon and evening of October 9, 2018, the place was hit by extremely severe storms. In just two hours there was 233 liters of rain per square meter.
