history

The name Algaida comes from the Arabic word al-gaida ("the forest"). The parish includes Algaida, Pina, and Randa. The residents are called algaidi (men) and algaidina (women). Algaida was first mentioned in a document in 1232. But the most famous of this community is Randa with the table mountain Puig de Randa , on which you can find three monastery shrines. On the lower terrace is the Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Gràcia , a 15th century monastery that was built like a swallow's nest on the mountainside. On the second terrace is the Ermita de Sant Honorat from the 14th century. At the top of the mountain is the Santuari de Nostra Senyora de Cura , Franciscan Hermitage since 1275 and the place of activity of Ramon Llull , Mallorca's great religious philosopher and scholar. He was born in Palma in 1232 to Catalan parents. In the 30th year of his life he changed from a man of the world to a hermit, from a troubadour to a monk, whose religious visions were the peaceful and spiritually fruitful togetherness of Jews, Christians and Muslims. His most important work is called ”Blanquerna”. He wrote most of his 260 writings in the Catalan language , which he thus elevated to the written and cultural language. He died in 1315 and was buried in San Francisco Church. There is also a Ramon Llull museum and school on the Puig de Randa.

climate

In Algaida, rainfall is recorded throughout the year. The driest month is July with an average of 12.5 l / m². The highest amount of precipitation within 24 hours was recorded on September 17, 1943 at 97 l / m².

Attractions

On the main road to Manacor, a few kilometers behind Algaida, on the right, an Osborne bull from the Andalusian brandy distillery Osborne is advertised . He is the only one on Mallorca. The tin bull so typical of Spain, obviously not very popular as a symbol of foreign rule among advocates of Mallorcan autonomy, has already had to endure several attacks, but has been rebuilt again and again. As a “national cultural asset”, the Osborne bull is now even under special protection across Spain.
