Location of the municipality of Ariany

Ariany is a municipality on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . It is located in the eastern part of the island, on the road from Petra to Santa Margalida . 868 inhabitants live in an area of 22.72 km² (as of January 1, 2019), 763 of them in the town of the same name (as of 2008). history

Archaeological finds show that the area around Ariany was already inhabited in prehistoric times ( Talayot culture ). Under Jaume I , the conqueror of Mallorca, the settlement is mentioned under its current name. From the 16th century it was subordinate to the Cotoner family, who appointed Philip V as margraves in return for the support this family gave the Bourbons in the War of the Spanish Succession . The village has developed around s'Auberg and the old path de sa Marquesa . The old portal with vaulted stones is well worth seeing. The municipal road once connected the houses of s'Auberg with Son Sureda in Manacor.

In 1982 the place separated from Petra, whose congregation he had belonged until then.

Today the municipality has joined the administrative association of the Mancomunitat Pla de Mallorca .

Attractions

The church of Nuestra Señora d'Atocha , the original church from 1570, was dedicated to the White Madonna.

In 1717 Philip V appointed Marc Antoni Cotoner, lord of the land in Ariany, as margrave in return for his support to the Bourbons during the War of the Spanish Succession. The margrave, who usually resides in Madrid , donated a new church for the people, which was completed in 1737, as well as a replica of the Madonna portrait of Atocha in Madrid, which also gave the church its new name. Between 1908 and 1913 the church received its present appearance with the construction of the dome and the bell tower.

Wayside crosses

Of the three crosses that adorn the Ariany landscape, the classicist Sa Creu , built of sandstone in 1856 , is the oldest.

On the road to Maria is the Creu de les Voltes de Son Bonany , which was built in 1969 in memory of the rector by Ariany Martí Truyols.

The most modern cross is the Creu de la Plaça de l'Església , built by Gabriel Mateu in 1979.

Windmills

Seven windmills have survived Ariany:

  • Molí d'en Marinero , built in 1920
  • Molí d'en Rigo , built in 1920

  • Molí d'en Piuló , built in 1919
  • Molí de Sa Cabaneta .

Others

  • Pous Bô i Jurà : The good water quality gave the Pou Bó ("the good fountain") its name.
  • Pou Jurà : The quality of this fountain, on the other hand, is inferior, which is why this water was used for cattle and for washing clothes.
  • S'Aljub : The cistern on the village square was built at the end of the last century to collect rainwater for the village. It can hold up to 800,000 liters.

Festivals

  • January 17th: Festival of Sant Antoni with bonfires in the village streets.
  • Last Sunday in July: community festival.
  • Last Sunday in August: Festival in honor of the Mare de Déu d'Atocha , patron saint of the place since 1717.
