Place name and geography
On the Ma-10 on the road between Andratx and Valldemossa, after a serpentine route, you reach the village of Banyalbufar. It is located on one of the mountain slopes of the Tramuntana Mountains .
The location of the village is also reflected in the etymological meaning of its name. The original place name binya l-baḥr (بِنْيَة بَحْر) can be translated as 'building the sea' or 'founding the sea' and stands for the foundation of a new settlement of a Moorish community in the Serra de Tramuntana during the 10th century. In Catalan and Latin documents of the 13th century, the second component is translated as la or sa mar or juxta mare , i.e. 'at, near the sea'. The original Moorish meaning of Banyalbufar is therefore to be understood as being built near the sea .
Four lower mountains belong to this municipality, Mola de Planícia being the highest at 942 m and Sa Talaia the lowest at 309 m.

history
After the Catalan conquest of Mallorca ( Mayurka ) in 1229, Banyalbufar was under the nobles Gilabert de Cruïlles and Ramon Sa Clusa .
During the Middle Ages, until the 15th century , the valley was ruled by a practically absolutist government: the Barony of Banyalbufar. The ruler of the barony had civil and criminal jurisdiction over the entire local population.
The inhabitants of Banyalbufar devoted themselves almost exclusively to agriculture. Fishing was only of secondary importance. Wheat, barley, legumes, olives, flax, hemp, saffron and, above all, wine were grown. The local Malvasia grape was highly valued. After their cultivation was neglected for a long time, efforts are now being made to replant them.
In the old days this place was really a vineyard. From the height of the village, there are around 2000 terraces, on which only Malvasia wine was once grown. This wine was not preferred for nothing at the court of the kings of Aragón , for Jaume I it is said to have been one of the reasons to conquer the island.
Today, tomatoes and other vegetables are mainly harvested here. The water supply of the fields is closely connected with the cultivation of wine. Nowhere in Mallorca is the art of Moorish water experts as evident as here. Most of the water pipes that carry the precious water from the mountains, which is particularly important for agriculture, date back to Arab times. The dry stone walls built from the field stones by the Moors slow down the watercourse and the numerous pools of water catch excess water.

Culture and sights
- In the middle of the village is an old mansion called La Baronía .
- To protect themselves from the Moorish pirates, a watchtower was built outside the village. The watchtower Torre des Verger (also Torre de Ses Ànimes ) hovers over the sea and is now the most visited viewpoint in Mallorca.

Hiking trails
One of the most beautiful hikes on the island is the hike to Port des Canonge near Banyalbufar. The route initially leads almost imperceptibly downhill through a shady pine forest. Later bizarre rock formations line the path, and there are wonderful views of the cliffs. The sweeping bay of Port des Canonge with its tiny pebble beaches only comes alive on weekends, when the local fishermen let their small boats into the water. The starting point of the hike is a bend in the road east of Banyalbufar between kilometers 85 and 86. The hike leads over an easy to moderately difficult wide forest path to the Port des Canonge. The path is marked here and there with orange dots.
The 3rd stage of the GR 221 long-distance hiking trail leads from Estellencs via Banyalbufar to Esporles .
