Location of the municipality of Sant Joan

The small municipality of Sant Joan with 2108 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) is located in the center of the Balearic island of Mallorca and borders the municipal areas of Vilafranca de Bonany , Petra , Sineu , Lloret de Vistalegre , Montuïri and Porreres . The place of the same name, which accommodated the community residents in 1717, is located about six kilometers west of Petra and seven kilometers southeast of Sineu. In 2006 the proportion of foreigners in the municipality was 14.1% (262), the proportion of German residents 4.1% (76).

The farming village, called Alahamar in the old days , surrounded by hills rising from the plains of the Pla , received city rights in 1300 with the land use plan of King Jaume II .

description

"This place with its monotonous alleys and gray houses has 1532 inhabitants, who live in 491 mostly one-story houses", Archduke Ludwig Salvator noted 100 years ago in his "Balearic Islands in words and pictures". This description of the small farming village in the center of Mallorca, the Es Pla plain, is more or less true even today. Although there are now 1717 inhabitants on an area of 38.51 km 2 and a few more houses, the somewhat dreary village character has remained.

economy

It is a community where agriculture and livestock are still the most noticeable branches of industry today. As a result, their products also play an important role, such as B. the tomatiga de ramallets (pigtailed tomatoes) and sausages, known under the Mallorcan name botifarrón , as well as the sobrasada de Mallorca sausage .

Worth seeing

Sant Joan has an unusually large church, Sant Joan Baptista , which dates back to 1293. The parish church has a splendid interior with an alabster pulpit and valuable ceiling paneling.

In 1992, however, the municipality added an attraction, even a tourist one: Els Calderers . This is actually not entirely correct, because the huge estate has existed for several centuries. But until now it has not been accessible to anyone except the owner family and their friends. That has now changed completely. In the first month alone after the opening to the general public, 5000 visitors, islanders and foreign tourists came. What they got to see was probably impressive, an intensive look back into the world of the Mallorcan landed nobility in a feudal manor whose origins go back a long way.

Above the village is the Santuari de la Consolacio , in which a statue of the Madonna is guarded. A legend tells that this figure was once found by an Arab boy under a burning bush. The main altar is decorated with a portrait of Verge de la Consolacio .

  • Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Consolació . Located 1 km from the town center, you reach this neat little church at the end of a wide staircase, which is an interesting example of the local folk architecture. Built in the 13th century, the church was later expanded and recently renovated.
  • Puig de Sant Nofre. Wild olive and carob trees, holm oaks and bushes grow at the foot of the mountain, in other words an undemanding flora that withstands the sun. The ruins of the hermitage of Sant Onofre from the 15th century are located on the top, now privately owned .
  • Parish Church of Sant Joan Baptista . Some parts, such as the side portal, come from the original church from the 15th century. The bell tower and the left side chapels testify to the subsequent construction (1759–1791). In the years 1927 to 1939 the church was given its final shape on the basic form of a basilica. A balustraded corridor in which the church museum is located leads over the two aisles and the forecourt.
  • Catholic center. The facade is crowned by an image of Fra Lluís Jaume, a monk who evangelized Sant Joan and who died a martyr in California in 1775. The center was built in 1922 and is located on Plaça del Rey Juan Carlos I.
  • " Els Calderers ". This old country estate lies at the foot of the hermitage of the Puig de Bonany. The property, representative of the manorial architecture of the Pla, the Mallorcan central plain, was built in 1700 and gives an insight into the aristocratic way of life of that time. All kinds of animals are kept in the stables and enclosures, especially native breeds; You can also see a wine cellar and workshops that have been preserved in their original form. The museum can be reached via the Camí dels Calderers or via the Carretera Palma-Manacor, the entrance is at km 37.
