Muro ('wall') is one of the 53 independent communities on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . The main town of the same name is the administrative seat of the municipality in the region ( comarca ) Plà de Mallorca .

The municipality of Muro has 7085 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of ​​58.55 km². This corresponds to 121 inhabitants per km². In 2006 the proportion of foreigners was 14.2% (956), the proportion of German residents 2.0% (132). The official languages ​​are Catalan and Spanish (Castilian). The spoken on the island Catalan dialect is Mallorquí called.

The main town Muro is ten kilometers inland west of the Bay of Alcúdia ( Badia d'Alcúdia ). A second population center is in the tourist resort of Platja de Muro, which stretches as a continuation of Port d'Alcúdia on the Bay of Alcúdia southeast towards Can Picafort . Much of the s'Albufera freshwater swamp, which is a designated nature reserve, is located in the municipality of Muro.

Festivals

  • Sant Joan Baptista, patron saint , June 24th. This festival is the most important in Muro. It is the first in summer and takes place in the large, central square. A variety of events are organized during this: sporting events, concerts, painting exhibitions, open-air concerts and dances, activities for children, etc. The festival is organized by the municipal council and various local associations.
  • Sant Francesc de Paula Day. On the first Sunday after Easter, Sant Francesc de Paula is commemorated. The festival has been held since 1714, but its origins go back further. The festival includes solemn masses and traditional celebrations on the decorated Carrer de Santa Anna. There are also other dances and concerts, shows about crafts, agriculture and industry. It is closed by a large fireworks display.
