economy

Viticulture

Binissalem is the Mallorcan capital of wine . The wine from this region is protected by the Denominación de Origen . According to documents, a considerable amount of wine was pressed here as early as the 14th century. Wine production increased considerably in the 19th century, until phylloxera was introduced from America to France and destroyed many vineyards there and here around 1900. Almost all vine crops fell victim to these pests. Only after the introduction of the resistant American grape did viticulture begin to revive. Since the roots of the American vine are resistant to phylloxera, like the leaves of the European vine, the American rootstock and the European noble rice are grafted together and thus together defy phylloxera.

It was not until the 1980s that the concept of quality began to prevail again in viticulture, not least due to the tourist demand. Today, high-quality wines are grown on the 1,200 hectares of cultivation area, most of which are located in this municipality. The vineyards with clay soil lying on top of lime are located at 250 to 300 meters above sea level.
