Geographical location

The town of Son Servera is located at the foot of the 271 meter high mountain hill Puig de sa Font , about 61 kilometers from the island's capital Palma . It is located on the main MA-4030 and MA-4040 roads from Sant Llorenç des Cardassar to Capdepera .

The municipality owns a share of the east coast of Mallorca from Cap des Pinar to south to Cala Millor , a tourist center of the Llevant . The bay of this stretch of coast is named after the town of Badia de Son Servera .

Neighboring communities

The municipality of Son Servera is mainly formed by a basin, which is shielded by several smaller mountains from the surrounding municipalities of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar in the south, Artà in the northwest and Capdepera in the northeast. The highest point is at 370 meters above sea level ( msnm ) of the Muntanya Grossa on the southwestern municipal boundary to Sant Llorenç.

history

Little is known from the prehistory of the community. For example, the Talaiot de Pula and Mestre Ramon date from prehistoric times . At the beginning of 2012, remains of buildings from the late Roman period were found near Font des Molins de Son Sard . In 1229 the knight Jaume Cervera received a village in the district of Llevant from his majesty, King Jaume I. From then on, this village was to bear his name, the new master, as an expression of thanks for his knightly help in the glorious conquest of the island of Mallorca. A corresponding document that could prove this does not exist, which is why there are frequent discussions about the place names and the correct spelling of Son Servera. The village has been on record since the 13th century, and it is more likely that it was named after the name of its master, the Catalan aristocratic Cervera family.

In 1820 a plague epidemic broke out in the village, killing 1040 of the 1808 inhabitants at that time. The Es pastoret monument erected in the center of the village is a reminder of this.

Son Servera

But when the island government prescribed Balearic spellings for place names in the 1990s, the dispute over C or S broke out. The S faction insisted on their interpretation that the area had been known since the 13th century for its rich occurrence of spear apples, in Mallorqui Called "serves". The C faction held against it that the first settlers at the foot of the Sa Font mountain came from a Catalan place called Cervera, which means "place of the many deer" and also applies to the Mallorcan Son Servera. In the end, the supporters of the S spelling with their sparrow apples got the upper hand. Since then, the tree of fruit has also been seen as a symbol in the city's coat of arms.

Església Nova (New Church)

In Son Servera there are two churches, the parish church of Sant Joan Bautista , built from 1622 on today's Plaça de Sant Joan , and the unfinished neo-Gothic Església Nova ('New Church'). The latter was built from 1905 to 1929 based on designs by Gaudí's student Joan Rubió i Bellver , but was not completed due to lack of funds. The work was finally stopped in 1931 due to the high costs. Maintenance work was carried out in 1994/95, post-processing in 2007/08. The Església Nova is now used as an open-air stage for numerous cultural activities.

During the Battle of Mallorca in the Spanish Civil War , Son Servera was badly affected when Republican troops landed on August 16, 1936 on the east coast of the island ruled by the Franquists . The Republicans did not succeed in taking the place, however, a naval unit of around 50 men of the "Black Guard", which had previously played a major role in the conquest of Ibiza , was ambushed by Francoist soldiers and civil guards not far from the railway line below the hill on the first day na Penyal . Three of the survivors were taken to Son Servera and shot there. A fourth, eighteen-year-old Domingo López from Barcelona , survived the shooting. He passed out and was “shot at grace” on his neck and face. Thrown into a pit with the dead, he escaped at night through the pine forests to his command in Sa Coma .

Most of the town's 900 or so civilians had fled the fighting. Military units had taken up positions in their homes. The headquarters of the Franquists in Son Servera was in the basement of today's Café S'Oratge on the church square. Almost every day the local area was under fire from landed artillery, bombs dropped from airplanes and from ship guns of the republican navy. The republican associations were able to take the hills surrounding the valley of Son Servera, which they kept under almost constant control until they withdrew to the ships on the night of September 3rd to 4th, 1936. It was not until September 3 that the Franquists were able to partially recapture parts of a hill, the Puig de Son Corb, east of the town. On September 4th, the Francoist soldiers and party members of the right-wing extremist Falange celebrated a victory parade on the church square. Son Servera was later stylized as an "undefeated village".
