Covered excavation site next to the road

The archaeological site at Font des Molins de Son Sard (also Villa romana de Son Sard , Roman Villa of Son Sard) refers to an excavation site of building remains from the late period of the Roman Empire on the Spanish Balearic island of Mallorca . The site, discovered in early 2012 during construction work on the MA-4034 road, is located near the east coast of the island in the municipality of Son Servera . The area in question had previously been placed under protection under inventory number 49/08 of the archaeological sites on Mallorca due to isolated ceramic surface finds from Roman and Islamic times (123 BC to 1229 AD) .

location

The excavation site is located on Parcel lla 75b of Poligon 5 ( parcel 75b, corridor 5) of the municipal area on the west side of the MA-4034 road, which leads to the municipality of Son Servera, about two kilometers to the south-west. Fifty meters northeast of the site, the road ends at the confluence with the MA-4032 to Port Vell and MA-4033 towards Artà . Before that, the MA-4034 crosses the Torrent de Xiclatí , a torrent ( Torrent in Catalan ) whose bed is mostly dry and which flows southeast over the Torrent Nou near Port Nou into the Mediterranean Sea. The Torrent de Xiclatí is also called Torrent de sa Font des Molins after the medieval remains of a water mill on the edge of the stream near Son Sard . Since the site is located right next to the west bank of the Torrent near the former water mill, the name Font des Molins ( high- Catalan Font dels Molins , mill source) is currently used to describe the location of the excavation site in the area of the Son Sard estate.

description

Wall remains from late Roman times

The archaeological site was discovered during the excavation for the construction of a cycle path next to the country road. After the remains of the building were exposed, a wall was built between the street and the excavation site to protect the site. The lane of the street was narrowed to one lane. The exposed ancient walls are arranged at right angles to each other and are held together with lime mortar . Fragments of ceramics, glass and roof tiles ( tegulae ) were found between them . The dating of the finds to the 5th to 6th centuries is provisional and has to be specified in the course of the excavations. In view of the few Roman remains on the island, such as the remains of the city of Pollentia or the basilica of Son Peretó near Manacor , the excavation manager Beatriz Palomar assesses the site in the municipality of Son Servera as a unique historical heritage, "perhaps unique in Mallorca".

Dig on the road to Port Vell

At the beginning of June 2012, about 60 meters east of the actual site, on the other side of the Torrent de Xiclatí , exploratory excavations were carried out on Parcel·les 19/20 of Poligon 18 on the MA-4032 road to Port Vell. Beatriz Palomar assumes that the building remains found so far were not individual buildings, but that Son Sard could have been a town of considerable proportions. The municipal council has already applied to the Balearic government for funding for further excavations. The archaeologists hope to find other houses, possibly a cemetery or a basilica, such as the early Christian basilica of Son Peretó , which dates from roughly the same period and whose finds are exhibited in the Historical Museum of Manacor . In 2013 the excavation site at Font des Molins de Son Sard was covered with earth again.
