The main building

Els Calderers is a former manor house on Mallorca and is now used as an open-air museum, in which the originally furnished rooms can be viewed. Located in the municipality of Sant Joan , it was built at the foot of the hermitage of Puig de Bonany .

history

The country house was first mentioned in 1285 under the name of the Calderers family . In the 13th century the aristocratic Verí family took over the seat. The vines represented the most important source of income until the vines were replaced by grain cultivation due to phylloxera infestation . Construction of today's main building began in 1750; the building was continuously expanded until the early 19th century.

Architecture and furnishings

The courtyard

The country house is a three-story building made of yellow limestone. The building is considered a characteristic example of the Mallorcan country house style Finca rustica . In the inner courtyard of the main building there is a fountain ( cisterna ) that still supplies fresh water ( fresquisima agua ), as mentioned in Archduke Ludwig Salvator's book The Balearic Islands .

In addition to the main building with over 20 rooms, the overall facility includes several auxiliary buildings, stables and fields. Local animals are kept in the cattle, horse and poultry houses; among others the black pig porc negre , from which the Mallorcan sausage specialty sobrassada is made. There are also various workshops: a forge with historical tools, a carpenter's shop, a bakery, a large barn and the laundry where clothes were washed and fabrics were dyed.

Various fruits and grains from the estate are stored in the granary of the facility: including chickpeas, horse beans, beans, almonds and corn. Various historical implements and tools are also shown. The machines were powered by the first single-cylinder petroleum engine on Mallorca. This motor was used to generate electricity and later to drive the grain mill.

Premises

The kitchen

The building has a wine cellar . Viticulture was initially the most important source of income for the house. But after the wine from the early 19th century phylloxera Philoxera was attacked, resulting in the destruction of vines, most vineyards were uprooted and replaced by wheat fields, so that the cereal production represented from then on, the main source of income. Today the winemakers dare a new beginning; the home-grown wine can be tasted by visitors.

The music room is furnished in a classical style. Many details point to the traditional musical instruments of Mallorca, such as the short Mallorcan flute, called flaviol , which is played with only one hand. In addition to many other instruments only used on Mallorca, violin making also has a long tradition on the island. 200 years ago, musical instrument makers enjoyed an international reputation, even if they could not compete with the famous Stradivarius from Cremona, Italy .

The bedchamber

The bedroom is furnished with a four-poster bed, which is a typical example of a classic Mallorcan bed. This mahogany furniture mostly comes from the city of Manacor, which is known for furniture production on Mallorca . One of this furniture that has been handed down for centuries is the canterano , a chest of drawers with three drawers that is richly decorated with inlays on the outside .
